My mind was definitely on vacation this morning. One of those days where I was just getting it done and checking off boxes during training. Was it my best lift? Nope. Did I follow my programming and the cardio I was not feeling? Yep. Off days are part of the process as well. They count. I don’t feel bad that I wasn’t on fire this am. I got in a good training session despite my mind being somewhere else. Do what it takes, don’t chase perfect,
just keep it consistent and move forward every day!

I want to encourage you today to take some time for yourself. If you have a child in the 2-5 year-old range, it can be tempting to “go, go, go” all day, just counting the hours until bedtime when you can finally relax and unwind. Many of us fall into the trap of being our child’s playmate, companion and cheerleader all day long! It’s important that she sees you doing things for yourself, and that she learns the important life skill of independent play. Allowing periodic separation throughout the day will rejuvenate your relationship and leave room for growth on many levels!

If your child expects constant attention, make this transition slowly. While you’re playing together, tell her that you need to step away for 2 minutes to…switch the laundry, grab a glass of water, check on the baby, use the potty, etc. Set a timer and leave it with her, saying you will be back when it beeps. Be extremely casual about it – try not to make eye contact or repeat yourself! You’re not talking her into this, you’re just doing it because you’re the one in charge. 🙂 Get up and leave, ignoring any protests. If she follows you, allow her to come, but don’t wait on her. When the timer beeps, walk back to where you were playing and pick up where you left off without skipping a beat. Repeat this at least two more times during the play session.

The next step is to pull toys out that will hold her attention and say something like, “I’m planning to read a book and enjoy my tea on the back porch while you play. I’ll set the timer for 20 minutes and I expect you to keep yourself busy until the timer goes off. If you do this, I’ll come play with you for a bit when we hear the beep.” Follow through with this promise, and talk to her about what she did during her playtime. Be sure to let her know you enjoyed your reading time just as much as she enjoyed the time by herself!

It’s so important for our kids to see us as separate people with our own desires. We spend so much of our time and energy making sure they feel secure and loved, but our tanks need to be filled as well, with intentional moments that leave us feeling grounded and strong.

PART 2! #traveltips #toddler
If you’re traveling with a toddler or preschooler and beyond, it’s very important that you take the time to give him a tour of his new surroundings. Show him where the toilet is that he’ll use before bed or during the night, along with the nightlight that will guide his way, let him help you get his bed ready and allow him to try it out to make sure it’s cozy, point out the kitchen and where he’ll eat his meals, allow him to give any dogs/cats a pat or a treat, show him where his siblings/parents/grandparents will be sleeping, etc. This will drastically decrease his anxiety and ease him into the transition of sleeping in his new environment.

Keep the sleep environment the same as it is at home – take familiar things with you to re-create the sights/sounds/feels he associates with sleep. Ex. noise maker, black out curtains (trash bags and push pins, towels, etc.), lovey, sheets they’re used to, night light, familiar books, etc. This is important because he has already formed sleep associations to these things – without them, the need to sleep will not translate as it should.

What she truly wants is to be in your bed or her brother's bed. Since one of her wake-ups results in this, she's left wondering which wake-up will get her there. She wakes during light sleep stages and cries out, hoping this is one of those times she'll get to go into your bed. This repeats, until finally the wake-up comes when she gets what she's been asking for. She doesn't know the difference between crying out at 2am and crying out at 6am. If your responses are different for these wake-ups, she's confused, but also encouraged to continue, because every now and then she gets what she wants.

My recommendation is to keep all of your responses the same. If you're ok with letting her work it out, as you mentioned, I would do that. Go in for a quick check to let her know it's still time to sleep (SleepBuddy would be awesome to emphasize this) and then leave until she settles back to sleep. She should be in her crib for a minimum of 11 hours, 12 is best! Stick with this through the entire night and get her up happily when you get to the 11/12 hour mark. Don't bring her into your bed or her brother's bed anymore in the early morning!!! One more idea: If you use SleepBuddy, you could use it as the determining factor for when she gets to go into your bed so that there's consistency. For example, when it's on, she is in her crib. When it's off, she can sleep in your bed. You would have it turn off around 6am. This way, when she wakes in the night and it's on, she knows your response will not be to take her to your bed, rather she is supposed to be in the crib. If she wakes and it's off, she knows what to expect. Hope this helps!! 💕 Laura!

As I close out this vacation it gives yet another opportunity to learn and self reflect. Vacations and relaxing are always a bit challenging for me, sounds ridiculous I know but it’s true. Add in multiple “families” and my stress/anxiety rise. My personal need for structure, order and schedules is even more compromised and I can have a hard time handling it. Theses qualities often limit me in enjoying moments and leave me with guilt afterwards. Trust me when I say my struggles run deep but I know I’m getting better at handling them and stronger in my sense of self. We are all battling something each day and the only choice I have is to keep working.

Monday mindset...You are strong, you are enough and you can achieve whatever you WORK for 💪🏼 Thoughts are powerful, I am great at encouraging, supporting and believing others but suck at being confident and supportive to myself. This is probably one of my biggest pitfalls and I have no choice but to try and improve on it. Goal for the day is to not focus on the things I suck at but try and point out a positive. Hello Friday! One week post show...still smiling, still flexing and all things considered handled this week like a boss. Post show is tough! Doing 4 shows in 5 weeks I have seen my “peak physique” for for the last month. Calories are up, cardio is down and I was feeling a bit soft and blah. Add in a my menstrual cycle which hit this week (sorry for TMI) and I was holding lots of water which caused scale fluctuations and mind games. Pushing through, keeping my mental game strong and moving forward...I got this💪🏼
