If anyone has ever experienced the outdoors, and I mean truly spent time away from the comfort of modern society, then they would know what the masters like Moran and Bierstadt were trying to capture in their works of the 19th century. Within the humming of modern HVAC systems inside the museum, I am taken back to the mist wetting my face from a rushing waterfall and the goosebumps from a chilly breeze on a late summer mountain summit. As a contemporary artist, I wish to further the impact of the late 19th century artists bringing them to modern discussions of how we interact and control American landscapes, some of which are now National Parks.
