And modern 🇯🇵 Japan. The most beautiful people🙏🏻

The iconic 1963 Hotel Okura in Minato Tokyo.
Now largely demolished, I managed to photograph the magnificent interiors and architectural details before its demise - I’m doing framed 500mm prints in dark timber - rich and detailed reminders of this architectural masterpiece ..

@Regranned from @warphotography - We've posted this one before, but damnnn, is this guy cool or what?

This photo was taken around 1868 by British-Italian photographer, Felice Beato, one of the first people to take photographs in East Asia and one of the very first war photographers.

The Samurai - 'those who serve' - were the military nobility class which emerged from Japan's provinces and rose to control the country in the 12th century. The Samurai found themselves in a position of privilege as they enforced the ruling of the shogunate and became legendary for their 'bushido' code. This code encapsulated fearlessness, compassion, loyalty, discipline, ruthlessness and kindness. To be a samurai, one must be many things at once. Calligraphy, architecture and the arts in general were revered by the samurai as it was believed by some that the practice of other skills would in turn enhance one's capabilities in the martial arts.

With the Meiji restoration period, beginning 1868, Japan began to open its ports to international trade. This allowed for more pictures of the samurai to be captured, like the one you see above. This samurai isn't wearing any armour, but as the saying goes, beware of an old man in a profession where men usually die young.

With the Meiji restoration, carrying swords in public became prohibited and the samurai class was dissolved. However, bushido was to survive as the national moral code of new Japan

7.31.17. Kyoto Tower.
.
Infuriating Things:
~ A guest who arrives when you have something urgent to do, and stays talking for ages. If it’s someone you don’t have much respect for, you can simply send them away and tell them to come back later, but if it’s a person with whom you feel you must stand on ceremony, it’s an infuriating situation.
~ A hair has got on to your inkstone and you find yourself grinding it in with the inkstick. Also, the grating sound when a bit of stone gets ground in with the ink.
~ A dog that discovers a clandestine lover as he comes creeping in, and barks.
~ Some newcomer steps in and starts interfering and lecturing the old hands as if she knows it all. This is quite infuriating.

"Stairway to heaven". Actually, it the upper level of escalators inside The Cube, Kyoto Station, next to the fabulous Isetan 12 story department store. #Newpost #notlivepost My favourite side in Tokyo. It shows two face of Tokyo, traditional and modern at same time.
Something different vibe in the heart of Tokyo. So fressssshhh... *Pardon the noise and foggy picture. It was taken 1 day before typhoon with heavy rain. Many of Tokyo areas were covered by a little fog. #RiriJourney

Day 13 (part 2) - Tsukiji Inner Market (Tokyo).
Didn't wake up to see the Tuna Auction, but just entered to get a feel of the space. And of course to see the famously long queues at the popular sushi stores within...Taste of one of the largest fish wholesaler in the world...

Day 13 (part 1) - Tsukiji Outer Market (Tokyo).
Died and gone to seafood heaven in this place. So many fresh choices that you don't even know where to start. Hustle and bustle of tourists and locals.

Day 12 (part 2) - Yakinuku in Memory Lane (Tokyo).
Strolled along "Memory Lane" (Yakinuku Alley or Piss Alley to the locals) and randomly picked a shop. One of the best meals in Japan. The beef skewers with salt, pepper and garlic were so good it got ordering another 2 (ya, it wasn't a repeated photo)...so was the salted shitake mushroom. The sashimi was fresh and just plain gorgeous, oysters and scallop were like heaven (slurps). Tried the raw beef on hot rice that le bf was super apprehensive of (interesting!). And le bf had the chicken gizzard which he loves. And then, the squid sashimi (that was the half portion) was fresh n well sliced. The drinks we had were plum liquor with soda and yuzu citreon spirit.
An awesome pick-me-up on a cold, blustery day...glad to have stumbled upon this warm and cozy place filled with locals (some were half drunk)... #tokyotrippin #modernjapan #stomachdriven #gettingphat #happytummyhappyme #foodography #foodtivation #p_n_p

Day 12 (part 1) - Shinjuku Goen (Tokyo).
Was pouring the whole day yest...shoes got soaked everytime we went out...but that aside, i could imagine this impressive park to be super gorgeous during autumn n spring.

Day 11 (part 2) - Snacked, munched and ate our way through touristy Tokyo.
Snacks from Takeshita Street (technically, Luke's lobster was 5 mins walk away). Started with the delicious crêpe from Sweet Box, followed by the Calbee potato sticks. Walked out to Luke's lobster. Came back for the rainbow floss. The 90cm rainbow candy floss made us super sick aft that...so we went for savory Ichiran Ramen...slurpssssss.
Then we decided to be super extra and went to see the Shibuya crossing...shock of our lives...decided to go up to get a bird's eye view. N managed to snap a shot of Hachiko without ppl posing beside (achievement unlocked). #tokyotrippin #modernjapan #touristsinjapan #crazycrowds #rainagainsian #p_n_p

Day 11 (part 1) - Snippets of Meiji Jingu and Yoyogi Park (Tokyo).
Saw many locals in traditional outfits...saw a traditional wedding procession...many locals offered alcohol, flowers and dioramas in celebration of Emperor Meiji's bday next week.
It was like stepping into a modern Jap village scene...loved it!

Kyoto Tower at night. Kyoto is set in a small plain surrounded by mountains. You can't see it here, but those mountains loom like silent black guardians in the background of the vibrant city lights.
