“When Enebeli Okwara sent his girl out in the world, he did not know what the world did to daughters. He did not know how quickly it would wick the dew off her, how she would be returned to him hollowed out, relieved of her better parts.”
Congratulations to Lesley Nneka Arimah and @riverheadbooks on winning the 2017 Kirkus prize for this beautiful collection!! 🎉🎉🎉
This haunting book is full of dark and twisting stories of humans at their most vulnerable and at their most desperate. Women marry to escape abuse, only to be abused; men fall from the sky, sent plummeting with the force of their own hubris; young would-be mothers create children from discarded hair, and suffer the consequences of a life created from others’ scraps. It’s a gorgeous book that begs you to re-read each story carefully to dig out the many hidden layers beneath the surface. A well deserved prize for an amazing debut. 🏆📚🏆📚
Featured here with one of my go-to power outfits for big Thursday morning meetings, a fitted checked blazer layered over a more feminine black dress. I love the keyhole detail on the front of this ModCloth fave! .
