Today marks the 5th year of when I got on a plane in Victoria, British Columbia and moved to Berlin.
I had never been to Europe before, but I knew that I wanted to come and live and experience life in Europe, versus be a tourist. I had 3 Victoria-friends that had come here that put Berlin on the map, my once-upon-a-time dance teacher now massage therapist Lisa Milloy, my burlesque performer friend Champagne Sparkles and then electronic music producer buddy @nathan_jonson_ . I figured I could do it if they could 😉
I feel a bit melancholic today because I can remember the day I left and it being bittersweet. My amazing ex boyfriend was so supportive of this goal of mine to move, and as beautiful, safe and lovely my home city was he knew I'd probably chew off my arm if I stayed. Dating in Berlin is a joke because of what he and I shared, so I wrote a break-up song on my album.
I left wanting to be inspired, influenced, have an adventure and learn about myself. Toughen up, and progress as an artist, and see if I could do some kind of electronic project with my accordion in a foreign land known for it's electronic music scene.
I miss my family and friends from Canada very much every day, but they understand that I'm restless and too curious to stay put. I'm proud and grateful for what this adventure has made me become, it has not been easy at all, but I wouldn't want it any other way.
5 years ago tomorrow is when I arrived in Berlin, so I consider today the labour pains and tomorrow is the birth.
