A major topic that is consistently coming up lately is children not taking risks because they’re scared to be wrong. For whatever reason, today’s youth suffers from more anxiety than we’ve ever dealt with before. They’re terrified of what their peers think of them and more so, they’re scared to disappoint family and teachers. The result? The refusal to try because they might be bad at it.
Ironically, life is all about taking risks. We don’t live in a society where playing it safe allows us to live a comfortable life anymore. In order to get that job, you have to put yourself out there and take a risk. Do you want to get into that fancy college that everyone is applying to? The typical application isn’t going to cut it. We have to think outside of the box to get noticed, to get in the door, to get the opportunity to prove our worth. All of this starts in the classroom.
Students need to realize that it’s ok to take a risk. It’s ok to not know something and try anyway. Sometimes it will pay off and sometimes it won’t. We need to stop looking at failure as something negative and recognize it for what it really is. Failure is just your first attempt in learning something. Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone loses. It’s what you do after that makes the difference. Learn from the mistakes. Learn from the loss. Try again. Keep doing this until you succeed. That’s what it’s all about!
