Let's talk about this version of beauty. My #WCW goes to the beautiful Davina Bennett of Jamaica who boldly wore her natural hair on the international stage for Miss Universe and on national television.
It frustrates me to no end: people saying "Her hair is the reason she didn't win.", "Had she actually done her hair, she might have won." <-----get out of here with this bs. News flash: THIS IS A HAIR STYLE. She DID style it . Her hair is cut, shaped, etc.
I want all of the little girls of all shades who follow me to understand that THIS image above, this hair style, this face, this shade of brown, is absolutely beautiful.
Society has told us that afros and kinky curly hair is not good and that is not accurate. If we can all take a shift in our perception of beauty, you'll discover beauty is everywhere and in every single thing and in every person. Society conditions us to think that this afro is not "pretty"-wrong. If this hair style could be seen as "beautiful" or "successful", etc. more girls/women would do it.
I've been on my own natural hair journey these past few months . I'm quick to straighten my hair, grab some clips in, closures, wigs , etc. because I've always found it/them to be more manageable. I'm definitely perceived differently when I wear my natural hair vs straight and that is very disheartening. I plan to bust it out more and more because society needs it. People have got to be more open minded.
I can't wait for the day afros, kinky curly, etc. type of hair is just as "cool" and sexy as straight and wavy hair 🙏🏽 Some of us know it but the rest of the world can't see past the cookie cut <----thats a problem.
Davina did what a lot of women have been fearful to do and for that I commend her. As I do my treatment today on my hair I'll be thinking about this woman and her boldness to stand in her own beauty and to do so confidently without fear of judgement. We can all learn a thing or two from her.
Congratulations Davina on 2nd runner up! You are that real life Barbie doll I wish I had when I was a kid.
Be your own kind of beautiful ladies ✌🏽💙 Note: I am not discrediting South Africa's win. This is about Davina/hair.
