Gifted this #yepmontana to the @mansfield_center in honor of the statesman that brought us "yep" and much more. Mike Mansfield was a veteran, who dropped out of school when he was 14 and lied about his age to get into the Navy. He served with honor in the military and later in many roles in politics. #bennionlumber #handcarved #yepman #mikemansfield

All rise Judge Banjo Cat presiding! As an officer of the court Banjo Cat has to obey the law but using a plain wooden gavel is a crime against fashion! Luckily Banjo Cat’s BFF Ambassador Mike Mansfield had this pearl covered “mallet of luck” on hand. Banjo Cat sweeps all kinds of things under the rug: cat fur, crumbs from fancy feast treats, sequins and of course political scandals! This handmade bobble head shows President Richard Nixon sweeping his “dirty tricks and scandals” under the “executive clemency rug.” June 2017 marks the 45th anniversary of the Watergate break in. On November 17, 1972, shortly after Nixon’s landslide re-election, Senator Mike Mansfield sent a letter to Senator Sam Ervin (D-N.C.), then chairman of the Committee on Government Operations, suggesting that he and Senator Eastland (D-Miss.), chair of the powerful Senate Judiciary Committee, consider forming an investigative body to look into “the Watergate affair and other dubious campaign incidents.” On August 8, 1974, Nixon announced that he would resign the presidency the next day. To learn more about Senator Mike Mansfield’s involvement in the Watergate Committee, read our online essay, “The Man Who Reserved Judgement: Mike Mansfield and the Watergate Committee.” http://exhibits.lib.umt.edu/mansfield/essays/watergate #grizstagram #librariesofinstagram #mikemansfield #watergatehotel #richardnixon #presidentnixon #presidentrichardnixon #allthepresidentsmen #presidentialscandal [#alttext three-dimensional caricature of President Richard Nixon holding a broom and sweeping a sign “1973 dirty tricks scandals” under an executive clemency rug]

Banjo Cat is hosting a brunch this weekend featuring eggs benedict with your choice of Friskies-flavored topping and signature meow-mosa “cat-tails” 😹. To top it off, Banjo Cat has selected the purr-fect teapot for this stylish affair. This 18th century Chinese puzzle pot is made of porcelain and is from the Mike Mansfield collection. The entire pot is hollow except for the handle. #grizstagram #librariesofinstagram #china #chineseceramics #teapot #teaparty #mikemansfield #ceramics [#alttext elaborate serpentine-shaped painted ceramic teapot]

Banjo Cat and BFF Montana Senator Mike Mansfield are honored and humbled to be asked to participate in the Annual International Pancake Day Race! 😻🇺🇸🇬🇧Banjo Cat has spent weeks training by flipping assorted foods like crepes, latkes, and stir fry for practice. In addition, Banjo Cat has acquired some small paw weights to help build up Banjo Cat’s wrist flipping strength. The International Pancake Day Race started in 1950 and pitted the housewives of Olney, England against the housewives of Liberal, Kansas. The race continues today and is held on Shrove Tuesday, the day before the beginning of Lent. This Pancake Day paraphernalia comes from the Mike Mansfield Papers. #grizstagram #librariesofinstagram #mikemansfield #pancake #pancakes #pancakeday #internationalpancakeday #internationalpancakeday2017 #pancakerace #olneyengland #liberalkansas #shrovetuesday

“And so my fellow #librariesofinstagram: ask not what Banjo Cat can do for you, ask what Banjo Cat can do for all of us.” Fifty-six years ago today, on January 20, 1961, John F. Kennedy became the 35th president of the United States. Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield served on President Kennedy’s inaugural committee and attended the President’s inaugural address. 🇺🇸 #grizstagram #electioncollection #mikemansfield #johnfkennedy #jfk #potus #presidentialinaguration #asknotwhatyourcountrycandoforyou

#WilliamODouglas ( October 16, 1898 – January 19, 1980) an American jurist and politician who served as an #AssociateJustice of the #SupremeCourt of the #UnitedStates. Nominated by President #FranklinDRoosevelt, Douglas was confirmed at the age of 40, one of the youngest justices appointed to the court. His term, lasting 36 years and 209 days (1939–75), is the longest term in the history of the Supreme Court.

Douglas holds a number of records as a Supreme Court Justice, including the most opinions. He was the 79th person appointed and confirmed to the bench of that court. In 1975 Time magazine called Douglas "the most doctrinaire and committed civil libertarian ever to sit on the court".••••Justice Douglas took strong positions on the #VietnamWar. In 1952 Douglas traveled to Vietnam and met with #HoChiMinh. During the trip Douglas became friendly with #NgoDinhDiem and in 1953 he personally introduced the nationalist leader to Senators #MikeMansfield and #JohnFKennedy. Douglas became one of the chief promoters for #USsupport of Diem, with #CIA Deputy Director Robert Amory crediting Diem becoming "our man in Indochina" to a conversation with Douglas during a party at Martin Agronsky’s house.

After Diem’s assassination in 1963 Douglas became strongly critical of the #war, believing Diem had been killed because he “was not sufficiently servile to Pentagon demands.”Douglas now outspokenly argued the war was illegal, dissenting whenever the Court passed on an opportunity to hear such claims. In 1968 Douglas issued an order blocking the shipment of #Army reservists to #Vietnam, before the eight other justices unanimously reversed him.

Happy New Year from Banjo Cat! 🍾🎉Banjo Cat is super excited to ring in the new year with the #librariesofinstagram and even acquired a rare bottle of champagne to partake in the #globalbookloverstoast 2016! This boxed up bottle was used by Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield’s wife, Maureen Mansfield, to christen the bow of the USS Leahy on July 1, 1961. The USS Leahy was named for Fleet Admiral William D. Leahy (1875-1959) who oversaw preparations for World War II. The USS Leahy served in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets from 1962 until it was decommissioned in 1993. #happynewyear #grizstagram #mikemansfield #ussleahy #usnavy #anchorsaweigh #champagne

As senate majority leader, Banjo Cat’s BFF Mike Mansfield gets a ton of perks! Extra peanuts and hot towels on all cross-country flights, unlimited condiments at assorted restaurant chains, and a license to park in Washington D.C. in specially designated congressional spots. These three congressional license plates (88th Congress 1963-1965, 91st Congress 1969-1971, and 94th Congress 1975-1977) come from the Mike Mansfield Papers. Mansfield served in the United States Senate from 1952-1977 and as majority leader starting in 1961. #mikemansfield #librariesofinstagram #grizstagram #licenseplate #congress #majorityleader

Senator Mike Mansfield would like to remind everyone traveling after the Thanksgiving holiday that both your carry on and your Banjo Cat must fit completely in the space below the seat in front of you, otherwise Banjo Cat and/or your bag might get checked. Banjo Cat does not appreciate being checked. This official US Army travel satchel belonged to Senator Mike Mansfield. Mansfield served as Montana’s Representative in the U.S House from 1942-1952 and in the Senate from 1952-1977. #grizstagram #librariesofinstagram #mikemansfield #carryonbag #holidaytravel #TSAtraveltip

In honor of the passing of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (1927-2016) of Thailand, Banjo Cat presents a 19th century temple figurine. In September 1976, while serving as Majority Leader, Senator Mansfield traveled to Thailand and dined with King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The two foot high figurine is made of wood and bronze and is covered in gold paint. #librariesofinstagram #grizstagram #mikemansfield #thailand #bhumiboladulyadej #bhumibol

Banjo Cat is on the prowl for a new bowl to hold meow mix at Banjo Cat's next late night jam session. Luckily, Banjo Cat's BFF Ambassador Mike Mansfield acquired a few choices while serving in Japan. Banjo Cat's presidential convention schedule is packed! Visits to the Lennox Company to pick out a China pattern, reception with Jackie, dinner with Governor Pat Brown of California, and Banjo Cat still needs to inflate thousands of balloons for Banjo Cat's victory arch.🎈Luckily, Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield has agreed to accompany Banjo Cat to the convention and be Banjo Cat's official Fancy Feast snack supplier. Unfortunately, he did not agree to help Banjo Cat with all those balloons. Mansfield served as one of Montana's delegates to the 1964 Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City, New Jersey. This convention daily schedule page comes from the Mike Mansfield Papers. #grizstagram #librariesofinstagram #electioncollection #politicalconvention #politics #mikemansfield #democraticnationalconvention

Candidate Banjo Cat secured a powerful endorsement today, Senate Majority Leader and BFF Mike Mansfield of Montana! Despite the well publicized solitary nature of most felines, Senator Mansfield stated, "we are stronger together with Banjo Cat leading us." Senator Mike Mansfield served as a democrat in the United States House of Representatives for Montana from 1942-1952 and in the Senate from 1952-1977. Mansfield was elected Majority Leader in 1961 and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1977. These three Democratic National Convention badges from the Mike Mansfield Collection are identified left to right: 1952 Chicago, 1948 Philadelphia and 1968 Chicago. #grizstagram #librariesofinstagram #politicalconvention #electioncollection #mikemansfield #democraticnationalconvention

Banjo Cat has reached the end of the rainbow and let's hope for Banjo Cat's sake there's a Costco size box of Fancy Feast Delights waiting there. 🌈 Thanks to @transportationlibrary for organizing this awesome challenge! Banjo Cat has thoroughly enjoyed all the beautiful books posted by the #librariesofinstagram for this #pridemonth #roygbiv! For violet, Banjo Cat presents "Arima Satoe" a Japanese book about the artist Satoye Arima by Michlaki Kawakita, published in 1978. The book was presented as a gift to Ambassador Mike Mansfield. #libraryloveisloveislove #grizstagram #violetbook #publishersbinding #japan #japanese #mikemansfield

Banjo Cat needs a new pad for Banjo Cat's next big soirée and this Japanese tea house should work purr-fectly! 😺There's ample deck space for mingling, excellent lighting, and superb ambiance. This electric tea house is 10.5 inches tall and 18 inches wide. It is made of paper and balsa wood and was given to Ambassador Mike Mansfield. ☕️🗾🇯🇵 #grizstagram #japan #japanese #mikemansfield #teahouse #minature #librariesofinstagram

Banjo Cat is purr-ty 😹 amazing at almost everything Banjo Cat tries, including weaving. Just last week Banjo Cat created personalized oven mitts for everyone in the library! But even Banjo Cat knows when Banjo Cat has been beat. This colorful and intricate Mexican tapestry is way beyond Banjo Cat's skill level. The tapestry is part of our newest exhibit "Mike Mansfield: A Good Friend to Mexico" opening today! The tapestry was created by Desiderio Hernández Xochitiotzin. It was given to Senator Mike Mansfield in 1967 by Mexico's President Gustavo Díaz Ordaz. 🇲🇽 #grizstagram #mexicanart #mexico #mikemansfield #mikemansfieldcollection #desideriohernándezxochitiotzin #librariesofinstagram

Banjo Cat is totally over winter! Banjo Cat is tired of wearing booties, mittens and stylishly tailored puffy jackets! To beat the winter time blues, Banjo Cat presents a bit of spring from the Mike Mansfield Collection: porcelain blue and rose colored cherry blossoms. These porcelain blossoms were given to Ambassador Mike Mansfield and come from Arita City on Kyushu Island, Japan. 😺🇯🇵 #grizstagram #japan #japanese #cherryblossom #porcelain #kyushuisland #mikemansfield

Banjo Cat and Ambassador Mike Mansfield can personally attest to the superior quality of the peanuts served on Air Force One under President Jimmy Carter. Mansfield was appointed ambassador to Japan by President Carter in April 1977 and on May 22, 1977 flew as a guest of the president on Air Force One. #grizstagram #airforce1 #airforceone #jimmycarter #presidentjimmycarter #airplanepeanuts #mikemansfield

It's Banjo Cat's final post for the #weekofroygbiv and Banjo Cat would like to thank all of the #librariesofinstagram for the beautiful rainbow of books this week 😻 MEOW to all of you! To find our #violet book Banjo Cat enlisted some help from Banjo Cat's BFF Ambassador Mike Mansfield. This violet treasure was given to Mansfield in 1976 and was written by Japanese art critic Endō Kazuko. The book includes reproductions of floral watercolors. 😺🇯🇵🌸📖🌈 #grizstagram #publishersbinding #violetbook #japan #japanese #mikemansfield

Banjo Cat has decided to visit BFF Ambassador Mike Mansfield in Japan but before Banjo Cat can go Banjo Cat needs to learn more about the Japanese culture. Luckily Ambassador Mansfield loaned Banjo Cat this awesome book on Japan! "We Japanese" is a three volume set that was given to Mike and Maureen Mansfield in 1978. The books include descriptions and illustrations of customs, manners, ceremonies and arts in Japan. 😺🇯🇵 #grizstagram #wejapanese #mikemansfield #mikemansfieldcollection #japan #japanese

Banjo Cat knows that picking out a gift for a new friend can be a real challenge: house plant or potpourri sash, it's a tough choice. This lamp, made from a cloisonné vase, was a given to Senator Mike Mansfield in 1972 by Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai. The lamp is covered in cherry blossoms and was the first official gift from the People's Republic of China to a member of congress. #grizstagram #mikemansfield #mikemansfieldcollection #cloisonné #cloisonne #peoplesrepublicofchina #zhouenlai #china

It can be tough finding your way around a new job, that's why Banjo Cat asked Senior Senator Mike Mansfield to give the new class of freshman senators a tour of the Capitol, January 1963. Despite having super secret cat clearance Banjo Cat was not allowed on Air Force 1 with President Kennedy and Montana Senators Mike Mansfield and Lee Metcalf. On September 26, 1963 President John F. Kennedy visited Great Falls, Montana on behalf of the Department of Interior with Mansfield and Metcalf. Kennedy's visited included a speech at Great Falls High School and a trip to Senator Mansfield's family home. #grizstagram #mikemansfieldcollection #mikemansfield #leemetcalf #johnfkennedy
