Great photo @clivehol of the talk for my show POWER FIGURES in front of my work Niñeen @octobergallery last Saturday. We had a full house and I am grateful to have been able to share what moves me to create visual poetry whispered by our ancestors.

Thrown Overboard from a Slave Ship. #MiddlePassage #neverforget

MOST RECENT

Practicing historical thinking skills like sourcing and close reading while learning about early American slavery and indentured servitude. We looked at this diagram of the British slave ship "Brookes" from the late 18th century. What can you tell about the creator, time/place, audience, and purpose using the information in the source and the document?

From Seattle's Village of Hope: Maafa is a Kiswahili term used to describe the horror of the transatlantic slave experience and its’ aftermath. On Sunday September 24th at 6:00 a.m. we will remember and honor our ancestors. We gather with our elders, our children, our youth and our adults to pay tribute to those who came before us and those that laid the foundation for which we stand. We come together across groups, across faiths, and across generations to give thanks, to pray and to be together. We are committed to continue our work to heal, to unify and to grow stronger. Much needed with the current hurricanes devastating the islands. #africa #maafa #remember #honor #our #ancestors #america #westindies #caribbean #indigenous #middlepassage #healing #aseire #villageofhope

#FBPO = For Black People Only. Pretty self explanatory but for those who aren't black and are eager to provide commentary...don't. This includes you #WoahBecky (I know it's Vicky but you're a Becky and you know it). I don't know who gave this brother delegation power, but I'm here to not only strip him of his rights but to also cancel this chick. Who, what, and why is she even a thing? Yo dumb ass running around the store screaming "I'm black" is proof of your privilege. You black? Bet. Prove it. And that doesn't include slang, stereotypical hood accents, or the homies you let run a train on you. You culture vultures , to quote @comedianshang, make my ass itch. Swear up and down you're bout that life until faced with real issues black Americans face. Then you turn all #MileyCyrus and start falling back on your whiteness. Bet your dumb ass knows every trap song but has to google #MiddlePassage. Fuck outta here. If you're black, then rep for black rights. If your black, rep for black equality. If your monkey ass is black, then put your black ass on the line for black people when it matters, not when it's convenient. I swear. I hate you and the million just like you. FOH. Ride off on that trifling, broke down train you rode yo #RachelDolezal ass in on. You're #Vanillin not #Vanilla. A poor imitation at that. But I've given you too much time as it is. #ShimShimSillyRabbit #BishBeGone. #CancelHer #YouGonLearnToday #StopHandingOutPasses #TiredOfThisShit #DarthBecky #MayonaiseFlavored #GirlBye #SitchoAssDown #FuckHerAndThoseLikeHer #BlackLikeVanilla

In Memoriam: Portraits Of The Middle Passage, In Situ -- experiencing the breadth of this monumental exhibit blows the mind. Installed at the historic #capecoastcastle, the detail and anguish on each of these sculptures provides chilling context inside this house of horrors where the ancestors begin their horrific journeys across the Atlantic. Painful. Discomforting. Necessary. My prayer is this exhibit travels the world for everyone to see. #africa #art #sculpture #travel #history #thisisafrica #instacool #usa #middlepassage @legacybros

Beautiful abstract paintings by Guyanese born artist #FrankBowling at #soulofanation at #tatemodern. #contemporaryart #abstractart #blackart #middlepassage #lovelondon

So this is Castillo de Serralles in the city of #Ponce. Built by the Serralles family in the 1930s. I sat through their video presentation and a tour of the castle.

The presentation articulated the arrival of the family from Spain. The establishment of a thriving sugar cane business and the industriousness of the family to advance the sugar manufacturing business and transforming it into a rum producing enterprise. The tour highlighted their aristocracy in Ponce and historical in #puertorico.

I was unimpressed because there was an elephant in the room. Actually there is an elephant in some of Puerto Rican history that doesn't speak of slavery as if Puerto Rico was exempt. Even as the film of the Serralles history shows African in the establishment of there enterprise.

A purposeful omission of the Serralles family as plantation owners from the 1700. And maintaining the servitude of slaves to establish their sugar plantation and DonQ rum enterprises. This presentation of the value of the Serralles family history also omits that this sugar plantation industry established a vibrant African community in Ponce which is not presented or discussed. It begs the question, what are they hiding? Why the omission? And where is the African identity in these social presentations?
