COMMENTARY: 'Colored', 'Negro', 'Black', 'African' 'Atlantic Creole'(Historian Ira Berlin in 1997 coined this sociological term), are just a few names giving the descendants of the Atlantic Slave Trade, but after 500 years what should the descendants of the #MiddlePassage call ourselves? Because, REALITY CHECK, 100% African WE ARE NOT; I KNOW, it gets tricky. Particularly in the last 4 days as American(some ex-pat') #MeghanMarkle has been heralded as the, 'first Black to join the #RoyalFamily' & many people started taking sides. Some people(including herself) view her as "biracial" American, whereby distinguishing her from #Black or #AfricanAmerican. 30 years ago she would have been deemed a Black American in most of the United States, & #GreatBritain, regardless of her father's "racial" background. Why biracial? It's safe. Biracial is a construct of the 21st century, whereby society is once again separating, & categorizing individuals primarily based on phenotype & societal classifications, STEEPED in Colonial RACISM. Where, on the other hand, 21st century genetic genealogy is now lending itself to a methodology that shows America truly is a melted pot. Dna testing, which focuses on our genotype, is a growing fad of pop culture, and one scientific aspect divulges allot about our history and our "co-mingling" society. If we only focus on her race, everyone is wrong. If true, 40% of people so called- Black or African American, based on genetic admixture, would be deemed biracial or even tri-racial ourselves. So how do we begin to DEFINE-if we must, who can call themselves biracial? Is it based on phenotypical, sociological standards and classification or is it based on dna-genotype (our genetic background)? The next Census, should we call ourselves, biracial or eliminate race in it's totality? Great Britain is getting a wake-up call of EVERYDAY, 500 years, and counting, U.S. conversation on race. Because this new spotlight of race relations is coming from on high. They have NEVER had a person of color in such a powerful position and race issues are sweep under the flag. So today The Guardian "TRIED IT" on the race topic.Get over it, change is here-Cheerio!
