Fiddlesticks! One of my favorite fiddle experiments to date... A couple nights ago Chris and I went to listen to @themoxiestrings on Mackinac Island (check out their page, really high energy and creative duo, sometimes trio!) and during the set fiddlesticks made an appearance. I was reminded of this memory playing my friend Derry’s fiddle outside of the Blarney Castle hotel in the square almost a year and a half ago, and I just couldn’t resist sharing it with y’all! I can’t remember if Derry was using knitting needles, chopsticks, or random twigs we found on the ground, but all are feasible options 😉.
For those of you fellow music nerds out there, we had her fiddle tuned down in open tuning (meaning the four strings are G-D-G-D rather than G-D-A-E). It really helps the bass notes resonate more when the sticks come into play. So she would play the rhythm on the bottom two strings while I played the melody on the top two! Full video can be found on my IGTV (finally trying it out, why not right?) or on my Facebook music page, which you should follow if you’re not already!
Also if you’re looking for another great music blog to read, check out the fiddler from Moxie Strings @dianaladio ‘s website Driift — she covers the real deal, the behind the scenes of being a touring musician, travel tips and stories, and more! Give her a follow too! #fiddle_forays #ipreview @preview.app
