🌿 Fig update 🌿
I've now had him for 2 weeks and he's made such an improvement. He has gone from cowering in one corner, shaking in fear... To willingly running up to the cage door out onto my hand. I'm so proud of him 😊 he's started test nipping me a few times which I don't mind too much but if you have any tips for how to react when he does please let me know.
Speaking of I just thought I would address something. Fig came from a situation where he was crammed in a cage with other males, to the cage he is in now. Which is not below the standard size, but is also not a permanent cage for him. I've been bombarded with messages (here and on YouTube) telling me that it is too small before they've read anything about him. I only had about 1 or 2 cage toys for him and places to hide and did not want him to feel overwhelmed in a wide open space when he first arrived. Due to this it's actually helped with the bonding process because he's more secure. Now that he's okay I'm on the lookout for a new cage so please leave any suggestions!
The main thing that has been bothering me has been people that have been spreading false and potentially harmful information. Luckily I know better than to believe and follow everything someone on the Internet tells me is 'correct' when it comes to animal care but please please be cautious about going out of your way to tell people how to care for their animals if you're not 100% or if you do not have a valid source that you could direct them to instead. The past two weeks I've had countless people giving me incorrect information telling me
1. I should put him in with another male
2. I should keep him on sawdust / carefresh bedding because what he is on now is apparently awful.
Both of these things would be harmful for my mouse, the second causing respiratory issues. Right now he's on a mixture of back 2 nature paper bedding like my rats and half the cage is shredded soft paper to make a nest. Not the best for making burrows as people have pointed out but also not going to cause him medical issues like many people have suggested. So please be careful before you hand out advice / criticism because it could influence people to (1/2)
