After years of wondering why people have such trouble growing sunflowers around their homes, I finally bought a house and promptly found out. 🌻
Every part of a sunflower is imminently edible, and your marvelous little mammals (especially the chipmunks and squirrels) know it.
We initially sowed them directly in the ground; they were promptly dug up. We transplanted them; the were promptly enjoyed as microgreens. We tried transplanting them as massive plants (which they hate, by the way, I just needed to know) and they were still mown down overnight. 🌻
If you struggle to establish sunflowers in your life, you are not alone.
Here is what you do: grow Tithonia, Mexican sunflower. A totally separate genus/species, they are absolutely tall, conspicuous sunshine (just like classic sunflowers) but they are distinctly bitter, fuzzy and not delicious. Your chipmunks will agree. Their flowers are 3” discs of fluorescent tangerine and yellow. You’ll have dozens of them. Butterflies and hummingbirds prefer Mexican sunflowers to classic sunflowers, on our farm, without question. They are so easy to grow, so eloquent. They are perhaps the epitome of why every ‘challenge’ has the silver lining you wanted all along.
You’ll find 6 varieties of sunflower at www.fruitionseeds.com, including classic, dwarf & Mexican sunflowers. 🌻
