(1) Alexandria Haris, Self Portrait, Scraps of Cardboard, Toilet Paper Rolls, Rocks, Disposable Eating Utensils, and Hot Glue (2017)
(2) Pablo Picasso, Head of a Woman, Bronze (1909)
First time learning and seeing about Picasso’s sculpture, I instantly thought about my self portrait because I feel they both have a crude, “unfinished” look, both not meant to be realistic. I am attracted to the deep contrast and shadows in the face. All I see are curves... this is his first Cubism sculpture. While my first sculpture is stagnant, his has movement, the neck is curved as if the woman were turning her neck. In another sculpture piece I did freshman year, I used more materials available I my environment like broken umbrellas. The environmental aspect of my projects is something I’m expanding on now in both my life and hopefully future projects.
