Thermal image of hurricane Maria, captured by the MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite.

While Maria weakened slightly before making landfall on September 20 in southeastern Puerto Rico, the storm’s track was a near worst-case scenario. It ripped directly across the island with sustained winds of 155 miles per hour (250 kilometers per hour). That made it the fifth strongest hurricane to ever hit the United States.

Colder clouds, which are generally higher in the atmosphere, are shown with white. Somewhat warmer, lower clouds appear purple. The image reveals a very well-defined eye surrounded by high clouds on all sides—an indication that the storm was very intense.

NASA scientists will be monitoring the storm and gathering data from satellites and planes to assess the damage wrought by Maria. “Scientists are working with academic partners to leverage NASA, NOAA, and international satellite data helpful for identifying damage that results from Maria, including mapping of flood waters from synthetic aperture radar using Copernicus Sentinel data processed by the European Space Agency, flood water detections from Landsat 8, Aqua/Terra MODIS, and Suomi-NPP VIIRS,” said Andrew Molthan, also a member of NASA’s disasters group.

“It really does take a suite of active and passive remote sensing instruments to glean different kinds of data from hurricanes like Maria or other severe weather events,” said Amber Emory, also of Goddard. “There are incredible benefits of being able to watch one-minute rapid updates from GOES-R to see convective bursts and tropical overshooting tops, but in terms of being able to see “inside” of a hurricane, we do rely heavily on polar-orbiting satellites like the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) and CloudSat.”

September Equinox
Equinox is either of two astronomical moments in the year when the Sun hits vertically on the Earth's equator. The one at 14:21 UTC on 22 September 2016 (in the image) marked the start of the astronomical autumn in the northern hemisphere last year.
The image was captured by the Meteosat-8 Natural Colour RGB, taken as close to the actual time of the equinox as possible – on 22 September 2016 at 14:27 UTC (16:27 CEST). Meteorologically the image at the equinox is of no special value, apart from the fact that the sunglint area, which characterises the ocean area mirroring solar radiation straight into the Meteosat sensors, is centred on the equator too, moving west roughly half the apparent speed of the Sun.

Stunning cumulonimbus at FL350, also known as ’The King of Clouds’. 💨
Every pilot’s fear! Beautiful from the distance but in reality these clouds are rich with precipitation, humidity and can extend to altitudes where temperatures are low, meaning possible cause of fatal turbulence. 👀 Just sharing my meteorology knowledge! POW POW 💥
Having recently started my meteorology exam it is remarkable how much we train for when things go wrong. Preparing for all scenarios so that on the unlikely but possible occasion when things do go wrong we can respond accurately and efficiently. 👨🏻‍✈️
