Unilateral exercises, ie working one limb at a time, are a vital element in your training program, especially for athletes, the majority of whom perform their sports with one arm or on one leg, eg boxers, javelin and shot put throwers, tennis players or runners and footballers, all use their limbs independently at a given time.
As swordsman, ronin and author Miyamoto Musashi said " You can only fight the way you practice"
Advantages of single limbed training include their
- strengthening the weaker side of your body,
- injury prevention as the stabilizing muscles of joints like the shoulder girdle, elbow, hip and knee work overtime
- improved balance and coordination
- core strength as it counters loads on one side of the body.
You're only as strong as your weakest link so attack the weakness and turn it into a strength.
