Stereo ribbon mic report: the AEA R88 and Mesanovic 2S are both great mics. In a way, they both sound a little bit like they look. The R88 is pretty beefy/wooly and sounds how you'd expect a traditional ribbon mic to sound. It was great on most sources, especially overhead and front of kit drums. The Mesanovic is almost like a ribbon mic/condenser mic hybrid. It has a lift in the top end that'll either help you get to your finished sounds faster, or paint you into a corner. I found the Mesanovic sounded great on piano and acoustic guitar for bringing out more detail up front, without touching EQ. Aside from the actual sound, the bodies of the mics themselves could not be more different. The 2S handles more like a Royer 121, is light and easy to place both horizontally and vertically, while the R88 is like military grade bomb enclosure. I only felt comfortable putting the R88 on the heaviest stand I had, and even then, it's a little awkward to handle due to it's weight and construction. If you're interested in hearing some of the comparison tests I did, feel free to DM me and I'll send over the Pro Tools session. Thanks to @leibo_from_vk for helping facilitate this!
