Hemming the bottom of a 3rd generation wedding dress. I ironed the skirt and folded and pressed excess of the satin near the bottom, it seems as the lace have shrunk so the middle of each skirt panel had bulky excess satin. I handstitched fhe folds so it looks flat from the outside. Then I unpicked the upper edge of the binding, attached the horsehairbraid by machine to the binding, folded it back over and hand stitched the upper edge to the silk satin. This both gives a nicer hem that is both stable and soft, and covers and secures the excess fabric.
Sure, I could have unpicked the binding completely and the panel seams going up and cut of the excess satin, and I could have added a lining to cover and hide the horsehairbraid, but the customer liked my current solution as it is faster, and thus less expensive, and I don't cut more in the old dress than necessary.
