Mercado de los Dulces
Growing up my mom always took care of everything. She even refused to let my grandma cook
for us because, well, taking care of us was her job. So unfortunately I don’t have any fond
memories of grandma’s cooking.
There are two foods, however, that instantly remind me of grandma. The first is popcorn with
Valentina sauce. I remember we had just finished shopping at the big Soriana market in
Durango and there was a vendor outside selling popcorn. Grandma bought me a bag and it was
the first time I ever had popcorn with Valentina. Even though I was just a kid, it stuck ever since
- a delicious way to complement a great snack.
The second is conos de cajeta. I’m not really even sure what cajeta is, I just know it’s delicious
and grandma used to make a bunch of homemade cones whenever we would visit. I think it’s a
mixture of caramel and possibly milk. My mom makes just about every Mexican dish
imaginable, except mole and conos de cajeta. So every time I see these cones I instantly think
Strolling through the candy market of Morelia, I spotted a stand selling these cones. I loaded up
on a bunch of probably high calorie treats and I got two cones as well. One for #ahorita and one
for when I reached the summit of my upcoming hike.
