💥Athlete Shoutout💥 I've been coaching my neighbor as a "garage gym CrossFitter" for 5+ years and he completed 17.5 today to wrap up the Open. Double-unders have been his biggest hurdle over the years and he just rolled through 350 of them!!!
-
There's something so special about being able to excel and compete in this Sport without any fancy equipment or facility. Garage gyms are the best. 🏡💪🏽💙

Coaching Tip
-
1) Telling an athlete "don't focus on the guy next to you" or "stop focusing on the crowd" isn't very helpful.
-
2) Yelling "FOCUS" to your athlete doesn't do anything beneficial.
-
Instead, give the athlete very specific cues and tell them exactly what to focus on. Tell them what to do and how to do it. Keep the cues short and direct. Say your cues with a calm slow voice when you want the athlete to move with composure and slow down and say your cues louder with more enthusiasm when it's time to grind and push.
-
Examples: shoulders back, chest up, eyes forward, breathe at the top, drive through your feet, squeeze your butt, head through, quick and aggressive on the kip, relax your face, get tall then pull under, smooth is fast just stay steady or GRAB on to the MF BAR and go like crazzzzzzy until the buzzer, etc.

So many athletes want to FEEL calmer during this time of year, but they aren’t willing to make any changes.
---
Are you going to do things a little differently so that you can be confident and more relaxed this season?
---
Are you feeling especially nervous about The Open this year?
---
Is the hype getting to you?
---
Do you feel pressure from your own expectations and the scores of others?
---
Are you finding it hard to unwind, relax and sleep well?
---
Are you over-caffeinated and under rested?
---
Are you feeling shitty about yourself after seeing others perform?
---
Do you want to learn how to go through The Open with a calmer state of mind?

Failure and rejection only have as much weight as you give them. You can perceive them as negative and therefore give them a stronger hold on you. Or, you can see them as positive, as effort, as one step closer...as willingness, mental strength and courage.
-
It’s normal to feel fear (hesitation, doubt, uncertain) and pull back from a situation, or avoid it all together.
-
It’s normal to not go after something because you assume that the answer will be no, or that it won’t work out.
-
Guess what? The people in this world who flat-out disregard the norm are the people who you see soaring in training and life.
-
WHAT IF YOU STARTED SEEKING FAILURE AND REJECTION (instead of avoiding them at all costs)?

How many times has someone asked you this question? How many times have you answered it? How many different answers have you given, or heard?
.
I want to remind you not to get caught up making guesses, or assumptions about what you think The Regionals/Event/Training WODs are going to be. Of course, if you’re doing this for shits and giggles, it’s not a huge deal. But, if you get really caught up talking about it, you are just wasting your time and energy. You don’t know what any of them are going to be and neither do I.
.
Remember, if you’re an athlete, you want to stay focused on your outlook and on what you can control.
.
If this subject comes up, or someone asks you what you think the workouts are going to be, try these answers instead
.
“I don’t know what it’s going to be, but I can’t wait”
.
“What I do know is that it’s going to be something challenging and awesome”
.
“They always come up with some sick WODs, I’m looking forward to it”
.
“Who knows? I just know that I’m ready for anything”
.
What you talk about matters. How you talk matters. What doesn’t matter…is what the WODs are going to be. You know why? Because whatever it is, you’re going want to be challenged and see what you're capable of doing and that’s all that matters.
.

Has anyone ever questioned why you do CrossFit? Have you ever felt like someone is attacking you for your choice of training methods
-
Do any of your family members our friends think you are crazy bc of the workouts you do?
-
I know that you’ve probably had to communicate with a someone who doesn't like, understand or agree with CrossFit. Sometimes, it’s not easy to ramble off the definition of “fitness” and how CrossFit aims to achieve it. You might find it challenging or time consuming to stand up for the kipping pull-up or explain exactly why you did 30 snatches for time.
-
➡️Next time you feel like you need to “defend” CrossFit…maybe don’t even try (or go for it if you’re really in the mood).
-
💥Instead, simply say, “All I know is that doing CrossFit helps me be a better person.” Mention that doing it makes you a better employee, a better dad, a better friend, a better volunteer, a better ______, smile, and leave it at that.
-
It’s nearly impossible to argue against those words.
-
Often, instead of trying to prove something, or defend it, it’s better to just say a positive and refreshing comment. Besides, our lives and our actions are far more impactful than our words. So you don’t need to convince anyone that you’re “right,” just focus on being an inspiring example.

MOST RECENT

The lack of mental strength is my biggest weakness, when it comes to lifting and WODs. When I prepare myself properly, I do well. When I don't, I tank.

Yesterday, I prepped myself for the WOD but didn't incorporate the strength/skill portion into my prep. (I refuse to hold back in any part of a workout but wasn't mentally or physically prepared for the fatigue that came from that portion.) By the time the WOD came around, my visualization of how it would go broke down. My chest felt crushed from the farmer's carries. I was fatigued from the weighted planks. My head told me to take breaks and I listened. Going to start prepping better and incorporate the totality of the workout into my prep... not just the main portion. Also, take better notes of what specifically was difficult for me.

It's exciting to be making use of the blue plates more frequently.🎉 When things are feeling good I am trying not to be vulnerable to the numbers and make some bigger jumps with the change plates. Harder than it seems, that mindset stuff!!

During your workouts, you want to make sure that your self-talk is:

1. helping you stay efficient with your movement

and

2. helping you push yourself
-
The most important thing is that you want to make sure your self-talk is helping you, and not hurting you. Your thoughts can either make you feel pumped, positive and capable, or they can make you feel lethargic, negative and full of doubt. Those "not so strong thoughts" also don't have to limit you. You are allowed to have fleeting doubts and discomforts and you can STILL keep performing your best. How you respond to thoughts is what matters, it's just easier when you're feeding yourself ones that are strong, appropriate for the situation, and helpful.
.
Build awareness of what certain thoughts do to your movement quality and effort. Which ones make you want to work harder? Which ones cause you to slow down or mess up? Which ones can you use when you're in the toughest part of the WOD? That's the first step.

Sometimes I go to the library or bookstore and just flip through books until I stumble upon something gooooood.
.
Deliberate, intentional, focused practice is where the best get better. More reps or more training isn't always the answer. You must know your purpose and goal, and try many methods of achieving it, with a plethora of learning and adapting along the way.

Transform your speech and your self-talk and you'll improve your way of thinking. Once you become aware of which patterns are limiting your or keeping you from flourishing, you gotta begin to change them (ps this takes constant effort, practice and time). Because, once you begin to realize your language can actually help propel you forward and HELP you each your goals, you'll do whatever it fucking takes💥 RIGHT?

You can always find ways to improve your mindset. No matter where you are on your journey, you can continue to grow, adapt and learn about yourself. If you want to get somewhere specific, or accomplish something, you’ve gotta make sure that your attitude is helping you, not holding you back.

Here are my top 10 ways to improve your mindset.

1. Challenge yourself – Do things that are uncomfortable physically and mentally by seeking challenge in your daily life, and continue to push yourself to do the uncomfortable.

2. Try new things – Go new places, take a different route, continue to vary your experience and expose yourself to new people and surroundings.

3. Take care of others – Regularly help people and give them your time, love, energy and resources

4. Be grateful – Get in the habit of showing and having thanks and grounding yourself in what’s positive and good.

5. Rejuvenate – Take time to be still, quiet and peaceful. Do the things that make you feel restored.

6. Simplify and minimize – Eliminate the unnecessary and simplify your words, actions, and lifestyle.

7. Do things love and enjoy - Continue to spend time with your passions and have fun with whatever you’re doing.

8. Explore nature and be outside – Read, write, workout, eat, nap, and just be outdoors. Everything is better outside.

9. Stay closely connected to loved ones – Reach out, talk to, and spend quality time with amazing people who you love (and who love you) the most.

10. Take care of your health (spiritual, mental, physical) – Eat well, train smart and sleep well. Be proactive about taking care of, and seeking guidance for your spirituality and mental well-being.

Do you encourage your WOD buddies who might be struggling? True confidence is about encouraging others not comparing yourself to them. .

Discipline creates freedom. Set up powerful daily habits and routines so that you can get where you want to go. If you don't create healthy boundaries and make smart choices you'll be accepting "okay" when you could have "great."

That moment.
Pure bliss, totally alive. Exhausted, but satisfied. Content. You finished it, you hit the floor...panting, gasping. There were those times when you didn't know if you could keep going, or do any more reps...but you kept chipping away. You got one step closer, a little bit fitter and a whole lot stronger. You're totally spent, and it's so fucking rewarding.

To be an even better athlete you gotta...
1. Want it to be uncomfortable
-
2. Know what will help you keep pushing when it is
-
What do you focus on when you're in the pain cave or you really want to stop? What's the one thing that helps you the most when the WOD starts to feel like it's too hard, too heavy, or too long?

Theme: #CrossFitGames - events, athletes, what it takes to compete at the top, mental practices that the best athletes use, how to prepare, what you can do differently to get to that next level (qualifier, regionals or Games)???
.
I've worked with quite a few Games Athletes and continue to be a trusted coach to some of the fittest in the world - I'll be at the Games for the 8th year in a row. What questions do you have?

You don't like snatches, so you don't practice them. It's tough for you to admit your mistakes, or have those conversations, so you don't. OR, you do it because you're "supposed to" just to check it off the list because someone told you to.
.
You want to get better, but only if it's doing shit you like, that you're comfortable with or what you're pretty good at already.
.
What's your attitude towards discomfort/ challenge/things that are "hard" for you?
.
To consistently perform your best, you can't avoid discomfort, and it's time to move beyond just accepting challenges, and start actually SEEKING, attacking and embracing them.

My workouts of choice involve heavy weights and complex moments because they allow me to slow down and take quick breaks of rest.  That has yet to serve me well in the Open and probably never will.  So the focus from here on out is going to be different than what I have done in the past.
-
I see a lot of running, light weights and body weight movements in my future... Grindy pieces that I can physically keep moving through. -
Honestly, it sounds awful. But, I can’t expect different results next year if I don’t address my greatest weaknesses.

When you’re at an event, there are hundreds of factors that can easily grab your attention and distract you from your purpose. Your mind is constantly filtering different stimuli as you try to stay calm and confident. People all around you are asking you questions and trying to engage.
