My training mentality shifted from the chip on my shoulder of "I'm doing this because there's something I hate about myself and want to change to be the best" to "I'm doing this because it's my passion, I love it and I want to see just how good can I get" . . .

I really enjoyed being on @kyleeseifert_kaifit podcast Love Rising this morning and getting to talk training mentality, future goals and the evolution of what listening to my body has meant to me! 💥Athlete Shoutout💥 I've been coaching my neighbor as a "garage gym CrossFitter" for 5+ years and he completed 17.5 today to wrap up the Open. Double-unders have been his biggest hurdle over the years and he just rolled through 350 of them!!!
-
There's something so special about being able to excel and compete in this Sport without any fancy equipment or facility. Garage gyms are the best. 🏡💪🏽💙

Coaching Tip
-
1) Telling an athlete "don't focus on the guy next to you" or "stop focusing on the crowd" isn't very helpful.
-
2) Yelling "FOCUS" to your athlete doesn't do anything beneficial.
-
Instead, give the athlete very specific cues and tell them exactly what to focus on. Tell them what to do and how to do it. Keep the cues short and direct. Say your cues with a calm slow voice when you want the athlete to move with composure and slow down and say your cues louder with more enthusiasm when it's time to grind and push.
-
Examples: shoulders back, chest up, eyes forward, breathe at the top, drive through your feet, squeeze your butt, head through, quick and aggressive on the kip, relax your face, get tall then pull under, smooth is fast just stay steady or GRAB on to the MF BAR and go like crazzzzzzy until the buzzer, etc.

So many athletes want to FEEL calmer during this time of year, but they aren’t willing to make any changes.
---
Are you going to do things a little differently so that you can be confident and more relaxed this season?
---
Are you feeling especially nervous about The Open this year?
---
Is the hype getting to you?
---
Do you feel pressure from your own expectations and the scores of others?
---
Are you finding it hard to unwind, relax and sleep well?
---
Are you over-caffeinated and under rested?
---
Are you feeling shitty about yourself after seeing others perform?
---
Do you want to learn how to go through The Open with a calmer state of mind?
---
If you answered yes to 1 or more of the questions above, ya gotta read this one -> http://mentalitywod.com/11984/how-to-be-calmer-during-the-open/

How many times has someone asked you this question? How many times have you answered it? How many different answers have you given, or heard?
.
I want to remind you not to get caught up making guesses, or assumptions about what you think The Regionals/Event/Training WODs are going to be. Of course, if you’re doing this for shits and giggles, it’s not a huge deal. But, if you get really caught up talking about it, you are just wasting your time and energy. You don’t know what any of them are going to be and neither do I.
.
Remember, if you’re an athlete, you want to stay focused on your outlook and on what you can control.
.
If this subject comes up, or someone asks you what you think the workouts are going to be, try these answers instead
.
“I don’t know what it’s going to be, but I can’t wait”
.
“What I do know is that it’s going to be something challenging and awesome”
.
“They always come up with some sick WODs, I’m looking forward to it”
.
“Who knows? I just know that I’m ready for anything”
.
What you talk about matters. How you talk matters. What doesn’t matter…is what the WODs are going to be. You know why? Because whatever it is, you’re going want to be challenged and see what you're capable of doing and that’s all that matters.
.

Has anyone ever questioned why you do CrossFit? Have you ever felt like someone is attacking you for your choice of training methods
-
Do any of your family members our friends think you are crazy bc of the workouts you do?
-
I know that you’ve probably had to communicate with a someone who doesn't like, understand or agree with CrossFit. Sometimes, it’s not easy to ramble off the definition of “fitness” and how CrossFit aims to achieve it. You might find it challenging or time consuming to stand up for the kipping pull-up or explain exactly why you did 30 snatches for time.
-
➡️Next time you feel like you need to “defend” CrossFit…maybe don’t even try (or go for it if you’re really in the mood).
-
💥Instead, simply say, “All I know is that doing CrossFit helps me be a better person.” Mention that doing it makes you a better employee, a better dad, a better friend, a better volunteer, a better ______, smile, and leave it at that.
-
It’s nearly impossible to argue against those words.
-
Often, instead of trying to prove something, or defend it, it’s better to just say a positive and refreshing comment. Besides, our lives and our actions are far more impactful than our words. So you don’t need to convince anyone that you’re “right,” just focus on being an inspiring example.

#repost @mentality_wod - After a workout, take a few minutes to assess yourself and the quality of your session. Do this regularly and you’ll develop incredible self-awareness, you’ll be more focused and therefore less likely to repeat errors in the future. You’ll learn how to push yourself harder and you’ll develop critical lessons to become a more mature athlete. You'll also be less likely to give a F about other athletes and what they're doing.
.
To be your absolute best, you need to reflect on how you performed and grow because of your experience.
.
It’s not enough to just do the work, you gotta learn from what you do if you want to keep progressing.
.
When you assess your performance, take your emotions out of it and be able to look at what you did well and what you want to improve on. Pretend you’re coaching yourself, and give yourself some feedback without getting too high or too low about it. It’s plain and simple really.
.
Quickly Assess Your Performance With These 3 Questions
.
1)What did I do well during the workout/training session?
.
2)What did I learn about myself, my abilities or my strategy?
.
3)What do I want to improve on?
.
Run through your answers in your head, with a coach, or in your training notebook/online notes to create a habit of this. Make it a habit so that you’ll be able to assess yourself more quickly in competitions or events when it matters the most. The more quickly you can learn and move on, the better.
.
Want to expedite your results? Build more self-awareness through answering journal prompts/questions. I have put together over 100 questions that will help you improve your mental game. Click on the link in profile.

Great to be training alongside @strong_ortiz again, it's been awhile! @jasonleydon kicked out butts and then didn't want to get to close to us because we were so sweaty and gross. 😂 Seriously though, I am really thankful to be up here for the next several days; excited for all the fitness and time with friends.

Athlete shoutouts! In the last week I've been able to help athletes overcome fears, prepare for huge events, gain clarity and perform their best. American Open weightlifting events, 5ks, National Obstacle course racing championships and more. Yea, I specialize in CrossFit, but I work with athletes in other sports and in other areas of their lives too. If you want to excel and are willing to do whatever it takes to get there, then you'll benefit from mental training.
.
@meganbuschkopf @rogerocrwc @ginny2505 @rob_muise are a few athletes I'm blessed to be able to coach as they push themselves and continue to pursue greatness.

I was able to get into a gym yesterday! Had no power but I didn't even notice, really no different than when it does. 😂

The bar felt heavy and awkward and I felt slow and creaky. But none of that mattered. Just being back in the gym was more than enough.

"Stay positive" you hear it all of the time. Coaches are drilling it into your head, and there are hundreds of quotes out there aimed at helping you reframe your thoughts to be more positive. Of course I believe in the power of optimism and using hopeful language, that's one of my core values. But trying to convince yourself that everything is going to be great or that you "really love" something that you actually don't like at all...well that's not the answer.
.
You don't need to walk around smiling, saying "I love this WOD" just because you are trying to be positive...that doesn't work for everyone and it might actually bother you or take away from your drive.
.
Instead, you can recognize it's not your favorite movement or WOD and also that you don't "need" to do it. But you CHOOSE to because you WANT to because you recognize that it's an OPPORTUNITY to become a better athlete. You can appreciate things without loving them.
.
You can decide that you are going to work your ass off and push to the end, regardless of how much you like it or not.
.
You can realize that you don't need to love every workout, but you still want to push your limits, create proper goals and see what you're capable of.
.
See, some people can talk positively about whatever it is, putting the shiny glitter on everything. Others, not so much. It just doesn't work. You might prefer the attitude of keeping it real like, "fuck this is going to be shitty but I'm going to attack the hell out of it." This does not mean you want to walk around bitching about everything, or being negative...that's never a great idea. But, it doesn't have to be all rainbows, all the time. It's OK people. You are allowed to dislike things. But, you still gotta learn how to use strong thought patterns that will help you focus on your purpose and help you get the most out of each session no matter what it entails. STRONG thinking is the key.

And so we rebuild. Again and again. Because of what happened today, yesterday, last month, sixteen years ago, and so many days before and in between. "It's been a crazy day, seeing the devastation #hurricaineirma caused, reflecting on 9/11.... Words can't describe the gratitude I feel." - @aprilklowe ❤️ #repost After a few days of no fitness and poor eating, I finally got to workout. #happydance

Nothing too fancy, just some sprints, squats, burpees and lunges. But it was perfect, thank you @mentality_wod for the workout.

I couldn't love this any more.

It's not always about "doing" or "figuring it out." I have grown FAR more by surrendering than I ever have by "doing it on my own."
.
Mentality Work Of The Day: reflect on this quote and answer these three questions:
.
1) What in my life deserves more action?
.
2) What would feel really damn good to surrender or let go of?
.
3) How would I benefit from less doing, and more surrendering?
.

I work with athletes throughout the year, in different stages of the CrossFit season- preparation/training, event-day coaching and analysis/reflection. We prepare, execute the best we can, and always aim to learn as much as possible from the highs and lows.
.
Introspection leads to awareness leads to growth. @_danihoran keeps doing whatever it takes to get just a little bit better, cause that's what it's all about. Ya gotta lean into the "hard" questions because that's when you begin to unravel your true purpose, motivations and goals.

I mostly coach CrossFitters, but also get to work with other athletes seeking peak performance. Roger competed (and crushed) a Spartan Beast yesterday AND then a Sprint today in preparation for The Obstacle Course Racing Nationals next weekend and OCR World Championships in October ( @ocrwc ). This guy is impressive!!! I plan to do whatever I can to help him keep racing his best.💪🏽🏃🏽🏅

Warning: I'm in a #contemplative mood, and needed to spit some thoughts out somewhere. IG was the victim to said compulsory actions.

#realtalk sometimes life is hard, sometimes things don't go your way. In fact, as often as it does, it doesn't. Nothing ever goes smoothly and you never feel "ready" for whatever comes next. So jump in, pull the trigger, take the leap, break the mold, dare to dream, be brave, take a chance, be present!!! As @justinsua says "Live life on purpose, with purpose!" #sidenote: Because this hits home for me, and I need to hear it as much as say it, don't wait for someone or something to complete your life, to give it meaning or purpose or to make it whole. Live the life you have RIGHT NOW rather then waiting for the "want" you HOPE you get in the future!! This life has too much to offer to spend it sedentarily waiting for something that may not even happen. #todaysthoughts #sorryitssolong #mentalitywod #cantsleep #igotplans #livealittletheysay #watchme

I tried to find an inspirational quote about strength and determination but nothing really fit. Personal struggles and your outlook on life don't just change overnight. It's mental. Physical. And emotional. It's a long process. Hard work has to happen and you have to want it more than anyone else. I'm incredibly blessed to be able to witness this in the gym every week and grateful to be able to document some photos for these hardworking individuals. 💭

When you’re at an event, there are hundreds of factors that can easily grab your attention and distract you from your purpose. Your mind is constantly filtering different stimuli as you try to stay calm and confident. People all around you are asking you questions and trying to engage.
-
To be your best, you have to learn how to navigate conversations and practice only talking about things that will HELP you. You gotta work on what you’re saying, how you’re saying it and who you’re choosing to say it to. What you talk about often becomes what you think about.
-
So, if you continue to talk to everyone about how tired you are, how hot it is, or what other athletes are capable of…you may be setting yourself up for feeling more fatigued and less confident.
-
You may begin to believe that you’re not ready, or that today is not your day. You might be trying to give yourself excuses in case you don’t perform as good as you want to (that’s another post for another day, you know what I’m talking about).
-
You see how that works? What you choose to talk about, changes your focus and creates a damn cycle.
