Forgiving yourself is an essential ingredient in reclaiming your self-worth. For a long time, I let the things I've done or haven't done, my self-criticisms, and my regrets follow me around like ghosts. They were constantly whispering in my ear, reminding me that no matter how hard I tried, there was a truth that someone would eventually find out about me. Reminding me that I was a fraud, a faker. That no matter how good I was doing, it could all come crashing down at any minute.
But then I found mercy and forgiveness in myself. I caught a break from the constantly crashing waves of shame long enough to FORGIVE MYSELF... for not being perfect, for not being a good mother in the beginning, for my many ways of coping, for hurting others, for hurting myself. Forgiveness is not a one-stop-shop... I'm in this for the long haul... but once you reclaim your love for yourself, it gets a whole lot easier to find your own humanity.
