It’s unbelievable to me sometimes, how even in our “advanced” society, the majority of people still don’t seem to honestly grasp this simple truth. For example, if someone had kidney disease, heart problems, or cirrhosis of the liver....people would never say/think “get over it”. That would be nuts, right? Well, why is the organ of the brain any different? It’s called mental illness for a reason folks. The brain is a complex organ, and clinical depression, PTSD, BPD etc...can be caused by chemical imbalances, genetics, hormones, trauma, result of other illnesses, medications... It is real and it is hard. So don’t add to an already difficult situation by judging, belittling, dismissing, or attacking the persons character. Unless you’ve lived with it, you can never fully understand their strength & struggle, but you can help rid the stigma by learning more about it and being more respectful of the fact that it is merely another physiological illness, and not make believe or weakness on the others part. Sending some extra love and light to those of you reading this who have mental health challenges. You are not alone. #mentalhealthwarrior ♥️Leila p.s. I would even rather the word imbalance have been used instead of “flaw” :) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Anxiety and panic are a part of our human biology. And the original intention has always been to keep us safe. So another way to approach your fears is so simply and gently acknowledge them, thank them, and then move through that fear anyway.
It helps to retrain our brains to respond to the right threats in future! ⠀⠀

A few posts back I reposted a pic about what recovery looks like. So here is a real life example of what it looks like and it doesn’t matter how long you’ve been in recovery, each day is filled with triggers. It is up to us to choose recovery and learn how to separate what’s real and what’s fake.

Moments like this is what I love the most! Shilpa messaged me a few weeks ago after she read my story that @morningswithmoni wrote(check it out if you haven’t!)!! And best of all, Shilpa lives in Chicago! You never know who you will meet, who’s life you may change, or what you’ll have in common. I wouldn’t be at this walk for the 5th time if it wasn’t for me sharing 4 years ago. Reflecting back, it was the best decision I made. I get to connect with others who are just as passionate about mental health issues within the South Asian community. For those that have shared personal stories with me, thank you for trusting me. Thank you for feeling comfortable to reach out. Please note that I will always keep everything confidential! .
.
I’m so happy @desisoulstress that we got to connect yesterday and I look forward to doing more together! .

No matter what i've got planned I like to spend the first hour or so of my day by the window, drinking coffee and eating breakfast with some embroidery or a magazine, or both! My magazine of choice is currently @justbreathemagazine and this work-in-progress is a gorgeous mindfully stitched rainbow hoop. Starting my mornings (or afternoons ;) ) like this helps me set intentions of slow living and slow business for the day. What do you do to help bring about calm to your day?

EXPERIENCING COLOURS can make the day enough. To feel shades—of uncompromising downpour, of 7,506 oil barrels floating on planet earth (yet made to be apolitical), of dismay, of hush, and of swans who don’t recognise me back—is adequacy?

It was an absolute privilege watching my Dad @coachpaulmason compete in a sport he loves today at @pca_official Cumbria.
His passion and dedication never fails to inspire me ❤️

Remember, Together we are stronger. Together with Mason.

This quote is from Fredrick Backman's new novel Us Against You, the highly anticipated sequel to Beartown. The novel is named after the town it is set in and Beartown isn't just any old forest town, it's a hockey town. It follows what happens to the town and team after a promising young hockey star rapes Maya Andersson, the GM's daughter.

Growing up in rural Canada, this book was very easy for me to identify with. It's beautifully written and really makes you think about the unbearable standards we place on young athletes without diminishing or forgiving the unspeakable act of rape.

If you haven't read Beartown already, let it jump to the top of your reading list. I'm only about 100 pages into the sequel but I already know it will live up to it's predecessor.

Forgiving yourself is an essential ingredient in reclaiming your self-worth. For a long time, I let the things I've done or haven't done, my self-criticisms, and my regrets follow me around like ghosts. They were constantly whispering in my ear, reminding me that no matter how hard I tried, there was a truth that someone would eventually find out about me. Reminding me that I was a fraud, a faker. That no matter how good I was doing, it could all come crashing down at any minute.
But then I found mercy and forgiveness in myself. I caught a break from the constantly crashing waves of shame long enough to FORGIVE MYSELF... for not being perfect, for not being a good mother in the beginning, for my many ways of coping, for hurting others, for hurting myself. Forgiveness is not a one-stop-shop... I'm in this for the long haul... but once you reclaim your love for yourself, it gets a whole lot easier to find your own humanity.

My babies at the pumpkin patch ❤️❤️

‘‘Twas my birthday yesterday. It was a lovely day. I’m 39 and one day now.
.
When I was a kid 39 seemed ancient. Someone who was 39 would have done most of their living and not have anything that exciting ahead.
.
Turns out, I’m just getting started.
.
This coming year is about work and family and friends and new plans and travel. It’s about taking a few more risks and not caring about the things that don’t matter. It’s about moving forward and being brave. About trusting myself and laughing more.
39: Bring it on.
.
.
.

You know what feels good? Being comfortable in your own skin
Not feeling like a foreigner in your own body
Being able to look in the mirror and love what you see

The path to loving yourself is not an easy journey
But one that is well worth your time and stuggles
All the ups and downs

Because if you work hard enough... For long enough
Someday you're going to look at yourself and say "damn I look good" and really mean it
You won't self harm anymore because you actually RESPECT your body
You'll feed it properly
And honor it

It's possible
And you can do it

#selfiesunday with the birthday boy!
Followed by coffee with mom and sister. ☺️❤️
