“The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.” On this #WomensEqualityDay, I am grateful for the rebellious women who came before me and made it possible for me to live a life where I vote, run for office, work outside the home, have access to healthcare, am unmarried and childless at 27, and have control over my own finances. We take these things for granted, but our great-grandmothers usually didn't get to make these choices, and many women around the world still don't get to. I have the incredible luck and privilege to be pursuing rich experiences across the country and around the world, but I never ever forget that I get to do this because of trailblazing women who refused to accept the status quo.
We've come a long way, but we still have so far to go, especially for our sisters of color, our transgender sisters, our differently abled sisters, and all of the women who face multiple layers of discrimination every. single. day. Like the suffragettes who refused to accept their lack of enfranchisement, we have to keep pushing forward so that every woman can live the life that she wants to.
