Diabetic foot on board!
Let’s talk diabetes, a disorder with a hundred faces and a thousand complications.
This image shows an extensive diabetic foot ulcer that was neglected and acquired an infection later on.
Diabetic foot ulcers occur as a result of various factors, such as mechanical changes in conformation of the bony architecture of the foot, peripheral neuropathy, and atherosclerotic peripheral arterial disease.
The mechanism involves a non-enzymatic glycation that predisposes ligaments to stiffness and neuropathy that causes loss of protective sensation and loss of coordination of muscle groups in the foot and leg, both of which increase mechanical stresses during ambulation.
The result of loss of sensation in the foot is repetitive stress, unnoticed injuries, fractures, heat, cold, or even unnoticed damage from a blunt or sharp object, structural foot deformities, and eventual tissue breakdown that cause blistering and ulceration.
In this case, local trauma and/or pressure (often in association with lack of sensation because of neuropathy), in addition to microvascular disease, have lead to a diabetic foot infection following an untreated ulceration.
These factors, combined with poor arterial inflow, confer a high risk of limb loss on the patient with diabetes.

What is the gastric balloon?
The bariatric technology – known as a gastric balloon – involves inserting a small silicon balloon into a patient's stomach through an endoscopic procedure. A doctor fills the balloon with saline solution to create a feeling of fullness, so patients lose the urge to overeat. After six months, it's deflated and removed.

Sunday funday 🕺🏼
I studied a lot for the past few days and didn't have so much time to take new pictures 😅 so it's a #tb today 🤷🏼‍♂️ I shot this one past summer after a long day and a few surgeries.
It's always exciting to do some practical stuff and experience something new after a long semester of theory 🤓

People can be broken, sure, but any surgeon knows, what’s broken can be mended. What’s hurt can be healed. No matter how dark it gets, the sun is going to rise again

Man has giant steel rod yanked from inside his HEAD after car crash!!!
.
The clip begins showing a man sat up on an operating table while a diligent team of medical staff rush around him preparing to remove the object. As the camera moves around the table it shows the size of the bar jammed into the man’s head, measuring just under a metre in length.

While two surgical staff support the man’s neck, the lead doctor clamps both hands around the metal bar and gives it a yank. After a little persuasion, the giant spear finally relents and flies out of his head as the short clip ends.

Do you think the doctors chose the right approach? Comment and tag a colleague⬇

Skin transplant on a 9 year old boy after a second degree burn on his left upper arm. The skin was harvested from his left upper leg following the removal of the damaged skin. There are two types of skin grafts, the more common type uses layer removed from a healthy part of the body (the donor section) like peeling a potato, or a full thickness skin graft, which involves pitching and cutting skin away from the donor section. A full thickness skin graft is more risky, in terms of the body accepting the skin, yet it leaves only a scar line on the donor section, similar to a c-section scar. For full thickness skin grafts, the donor section will often heal much more quickly and it is less painful than a partial thickness skin graft.

RepostBy @medical.pictures: "What Is a Colostomy?
.
🏩🏨A colostomy is an opening in the belly (abdominal wall) that’s made during surgery. The end of the colon (large intestine) is brought through this opening to form a stoma. Where the stoma will be on the abdomen depends on which part of the colon is used to make it. Some colostomies are large, some small; some are on the left side of the abdomen, some are on the right, others may be in the middle.
.
📙📚When you look at a stoma, you are actually looking at the lining (the mucosa) of the intestine, which looks a lot like the inside lining of your cheek. The stoma will look pink to red. It’s warm and moist and secretes small amounts of mucus.
.
📍🖍The way the stoma looks depends on the type of colostomy the surgeon makes and on individual body differences. It may look quite large at first, but will shrink to its final size about 6 to 8 weeks after surgery. The shape will be round to oval. Some stomas may stick out a little, while others are flat against the skin.
.
📖📌Unlike the anus, the stoma has no valve or shut-off muscle. This means you won’t be able to control the passage of stool from the stoma, but sometimes bowel movements can be managed in other ways. There are no nerve endings in the stoma, so the stoma itself is not a source of pain or discomfort.
.
🔍🗃A colostomy is not a disease, but a change in the way your body works. It surgically changes normal body function to allow stool to pass after a disease or injury.
Reasons for the procedure
.
💉💊Colostomy surgery may be needed to treat several different diseases and conditions. These include:
.
🛡🌡Birth defect, such as a blocked or missing anal opening, called an imperforate anus
.
Serious infection, such as diverticulitis, inflammation of little sacs on the colon
.
Inflammatory bowel disease
.
Injury to the colon or rectum
.
Partial or complete intestinal or bowel blockage
.
Rectal or colon cancer
.
Wounds or fistulas in the perineum. .
