Proof that cats go to heaven!😻
Fresco at the Ospedale di Santa Maria Nuova, not new at all - in fact one of the oldest continuously running hospitals in the world! Founded in the 13th century and still the main city hospital today. Truly art for the soul (care of the soul was as important as healing the body in the early modern period) Personally I would find the thought of cats in heaven very reassuring! .

Close up of Andrea del Castagno’s Last Supper in the refectory of Sant’Appollonia, Florence.
Painted for the female convent 1445-50. Sant’Appollonia was one of the wealthiest and most noble convents in the city. .

Office appropriate footwear? Florence and fashion have always been synonymous and the remodelled galleries at the Palazzo Pitti definitely prove that!
⚜️
Many of the cities merchants made their money in the textile trade, Florence was known for its particularly fine woollen cloth (which btw actually came from England but was processed here) and the wealth and power of the Arte della Lana was testament to the size and success of the industry. (The Arte della Lana funded and oversaw many of the biggest commissions in the city - including the Duomo).
⚜️
The Palazzo Pitti has stunningly laid out it’s collection in a beautiful suite of rooms. It’s hard to tell whether you’re in a palace museum or a really upscale boutique! ⚜️
Pitti you’re on point 👌

Just paid a visit to the Museo Bardini. Whilst it’s very beautiful and the layout is superb, I couldn’t help but feel it was a little like a graveyard for late Medieval Florence. ⚜️
Stefano Bardini was a very successful antiques dealer in the 19th Century - he basically ran the souvenir shop for Brits on the Grand Tour - selling Italy’s culture patrimony to end up in our museums and country houses. I’ve got pretty mixed feelings about this!
⚜️
It means that, of what was gifted to form a museum (the stock he couldn’t sell before he died, if you’re cynical about it) there is little/ no provenance. So it can’t really tell us very much. As a historian this really upsets me!
⚜️
Stefano Bardini: chief supplier to the V&A? What do you think? .

I was reunited with the absolute queen of mega babes, Botticelli’s Pallas (of Pallas and the Centaur fame) the other night.
Last time I saw her was during the exhibition @vamuseum where I spent so much time gazing at the work that a security guard asked me what I was doing! 🙈 (how do you reply to that?! Umm...looking? Obviously...🤦‍♀️) ANYWAY....the art/history bit:
⚜️
Painted by Sandro Botticelli c.1482 ⚜️
Pallas Athene/ Minerva is the goddess of wisdom. A centaur symbolises uncontrolled emotion, lust and passion. So, at least in part, this is about the submission of emotion to reason. ⚜️
Lorenzo de’Medici is likely to have commissioned it. The Medici coat of arms contains golden balls (palle) so the subject could be a pun on this.
⚜️
The branches surrounding her are laurel, perhaps a pun on Lorenzo as well as symbolising victory (the triumph of reason over emotion) and indicating chastity and virtue. ⚜️
This would make sense if it was a wedding gift from Lorenzo to his cousin. Pallas is embodying the virtues expected of a woman and fulfilling the role of a wife upon marriage - in taming a young man’s passions and wild ways (which btw is what the ritual of a stag do encompasses) Who knows, there might even be a private joke in here about what Lorenzo’a cousin was like before he had to tie the knot! .

Grace 1: OMG Do you think he like’s me?
Grace 2: he’s totes into you, just playing hard to get.
Grace 1: Ugh, he’s SO fit!!
Grace 2: Just be cool babe. Keep dancing. ⚡️Mercury, stirring things up since 1482 ⚡️ ⚜️Botticelli’s Primavera, 1482⚜️ 🔹
This painting is recorded in the 1498 inventory for the Medici house on Via Larga (now a McDonalds...🤦‍♀️)
It is a spalliera meaning it originally hung on the back of a day bed.
Its allegory is pretty complex and is thought to be inspired by Agnolo Poliziano’s poetry.
🔹
A portrait of Poliziano (important humanist, neo-platonic academy member, tutor to the Medici children, general literary man at large) can be seen in the frescoes of the Sassetti Chapel in S.Trinita. Painted by Ghirlandaio the frescoes are truly a thing of beauty. 🔹
Go and see it for yourself @uffizigalleries (go really late or really early so that there are fewer people and so that you REALLY get to look at it)

The tower of the Palazzo Vecchio yesterday evening with the most extraordinary inky sky. I always think it’s exactly the sort of place you’d expect to see a dragon... 🐉
⚜️
The tower isn’t exactly central to the main palazzo as the architect (Arnoldo di Cambio -who also designed the cathedral) repurposed an existing medieval tower (Florence’s skyline used to look like San Gimignano’s)
⚜️
It was also a prison and at various points held Cosimo de’Medici (1435) and Savonarola (1498). Cosimo survived, Savonarola was executed.
⚜️
The Palazzo itself was the seat of Florentine government for most of its history and its name changed along with the government (Palazzo del Popolo; della signoria; dei Priori; ducale) only becoming the Palazzo Vecchio when Cosimo I moved officially to the Palazzo Pitti.
⚜️
And it even temporarily became the seat of Italy’s provisional government after unification.
⚜️
Oh and inside is pretty spectacular too 😉

FAN GIRL ALERT: Yesterday to my absolutely joy I saw two portraits by Jacopo Pontormo that I have only ever seen in catalogues and I’m in love 😍
🔸
⚜️Portrait of a Young Man in a Red Cap (Carlo Neroni?) c.1530
⚜️Portrait of a halberdier (Francesco Guardi?) c.1529-30
🔸
They depict young men dressed in the style of the city during the siege of Florence (1529-30) when men cut their hair short and started wearing caps. The city was a republic and the siege ended with its overthrow and the installation of Alessandro de’Medici as ruler. 🔹
Both of these portraits are mentioned by Vasari and having always been an ardent admirer of Bronzino (major history crush) you can really see where he learnt his skill from!
🔹
The exhibition is on at the Palazzo Pitti until the end of July. It’s small and perfectly formed - each work there is of truly exquisite beauty and significance. Not to mention the fact that these two portraits are just mesmerising! 💖 I’m such a fan girl 🙈 @uffizigalleries 🔹

🔸Fra Filippo Lippi, Madonna and child with scenes of the life of St Anne,1452-53🔸
FRA Filippo was originally a monk belonging to the Carmelite order and, so the story goes, (Vasari), was so inspired by seeing Masaccio at work he took up painting himself.
🔹
He left the convent (having in fallen in love with a nun! 🙏) and (according to our favourite unreliable narrator) he was captured by pirates when working in southern Italy!
His ability to draw was so great that it saved him - he did a portrait of his captor and realising he had great talent, they released him!
🔹
Returning to Florence he garnered the support of the Medici family but was so distracted by all the belle donne 🙋‍♀️they had to lock him up to compel him to work! 👨🏼‍🎨Even then he escaped by tying his bedsheets together and climbing out of the window.
I suppose if you have been in a monastery since you were 8 and finally have freedom, you’re going to make up for lost time! 😏
🔹
I think his women (along with those of Verrocchio, Ghirlandaio, Botticelli and Da Vinci) are the most beautiful depictions of female beauty. Spot the the theme!😆
🔹
⚜️you can see this truly wonderful work in all its glory at the Pitti Palace in Florence ⚜️

Waking up like, argh bright light! ⚜️
🔸Giambologna’s Rape of the Sabine women (1574-80)🔸
When originally sculpted it was intended purely as a display of artistic virtuosity (seen through the contorted figures), directly competing with the sculptures of the ancient world and Michelangelo. It was only later that it was given a subject and named. It was commissioned by Ferdinand I for the Loggia dei Lanzi. Originally the loggia (della Signoria) had been important location of public ceremonies used by the republican government officials.

I don’t *actually* live there but the late evening light at the Spedale degli Innocenti @museo_degli_innocenti was just to gorgeous to ignore! And what a place for a party!!
🎉
The Spedale was designed by Brunelleschi and inaugurated in 1445. This is the interior rather than the famous and highly influential portico facing the square of SS.Annunziata (one of my favourite churches in Florence).
🏛
The Spedale was the earliest foundling hospital in Europe and it’s activities (taking in abandoned children) set the pattern across the continent.
🍼
In the distance you can see the dome of the stunning 19th century synagogue 🌄
