Today is #BellLetsTalk day which raises mental health awareness and encourages open and personal conversations to share our experiences struggling with mental health.... the picture will make sense if you read on 😉. As this campaign in Canada has become more and more successful, I’ve noticed more and more people have mustered the courage to expose their inner struggles and feel supported in realizing they aren’t alone in their struggle. This is incredible! What I want to talk about today is not only talking, but also LISTENING (hence the silly photo I chose 😉). I have a challenge for you to engage in when hearing other’s stories today- try to refrain from saying “I” in your responses, try to refrain from reaching for your phone when you hear the tone that has created a natural reflex within you, and finally engage in eye contact (it could be harder than you think!). This is called active listening and it makes the world of a difference for those sharing today. So please share your story on #bellletstalk day, but also let’s listen today. #yourenotalone #activelistening #dogswithears #mentalhealth #mclairdmedicine

I’m back at the office and launching into 2018! What are your New Years intentions? Take a couple moments this week to reflect on 2017 by yourself, with your partner, and with your family. This exercise is simple and can really engage growth as we get a new canvas to paint on in 2018. (1) what were your greatest accomplishments of 2017? (2) what do you want to leave behind in 2017? (3) what do you want to do differently in 2018? #startingfresh #2018 #healthgoals #mclairdmedicine (photo cred to google)

Wishing you and the special people in your life the warmest wishes for the upcoming holidays celebrating everything that counts in life- love for one another. One of my favourite quotations, “love is what’s in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and LISTEN”, by a boy who is only seven! So take some time to listen... and if you are still looking for some health promoting presents, check out my blog posted on my Facebook page. #fromthemouthsofbabes #listentoyourheart #makeitcount #mclairdmedicine

Recently I have been in desperate need for some rejuvenation and got just what I was needing at #bodyblitz. Have you ever experienced a Scandinavian spa? It involves alternation between hot and cold temperatures where your blood vessels dilate with the heat improving blood flow within the body followed by cold waters which shunts the blood flow deep into your internal organs. When this is repeated it helps provide fresh blood flow to your organs and improves circulation to your entire body. This is called #hydrotherapy and although it’s just using water, the effects are really powerful! Tip for the cold plunge- hold your breath and get in as fast as you can! #ripthebandaidoff #the6 #watermedicine #mclairdmedicine

So who needs an extra excuse to have a bit more chocolate in your life? The key factor to making chocolate healthy for you is to avoid any chocolate with added refined sugar and dairy - ie the beloved milk chocolate and replace this with raw cacao. Benefits of raw cacao: more than 300 phytochemicals and nearly four times the antioxidant capacity of regular dark chocolate, it enhances micro circulation which is important in fighting wrinkles but also the maintenance of brain function and memory, it's been proven to have mood enhancing abilities by releasing endorphins and serotonin, enhances glucose metabolism and also helps to maintain a healthy blood pressure. Of course raw cacao is not proven to treat these conditions as a solo therapy, but could be helpful to incorporate into a comprehensive health prescription. Try making this chocolate pudding at home: 3 late avocadoes, 1/4 cup raw cacao, 3-6 tbsp of coconut milk, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 2tsp coconut oil and 2 tbsp raw honey. Blend together in a blender on high until smooth, refrigerate for 30 minutes and enjoy! Add some raw cacao nibs on top for an added crunch if desired! #hideyourgreens #foodasmedicine #avocadopudding #healthydessert #wellnesswisdomwednesday #mclairdmedicine

Inspiration for #personalgrowth from my #passionplanner that I couldn't help but share today. Self reflection can be the most challenging but the most enlightening and rewarding exercise to take the time to do. It will enrich your relationship with yourself and with everyone around you #behumble #becauseyoureworthit #healthtiptuesday #mclairdmedicine

Do you ever think about the number of chemicals you are exposed to every single day? Every chemical has been tested in isolation for safety, but what has become worrisome is the accumulated effect of daily exposure to NUMEROUS chemicals and how that can take a toll on our health. It is impossible to live in bubbles nor would we want to! - but have you considered how you can control some of your toxic load exposure? For people wearing makeup- consider switching to clean brands to limit direct absorption through your skin pores. #janeiredale is a trusted brand which does not contain talc, FD&C dyes, synthetic preservatives, parabens, or synthetic fragrance. It scores 1-2 out of 10 on the #ewg skin deep cosmetic database making it one of the lowest hazard levels. Other items to replace with less toxic alternatives would include fragrance (just say no to febreeze!), hairspray, and shampoo (our largest pores are on our scalp!) #chemicaldetox #wellnesswisdomwednesday #mclairdmedicine

Studies show surrounding yourself with positive encouraging words improves motivation, elevates mood and enhances productivity - I look at this mousepad everyday as I sit down to tackle a never ending pile of work and on those days that it feels overwhelming (we all have them!), it gently reminds me I "can" rather than I "can't". Do you have something in your work space that can pick you up when you are feeling down? #mousepadmotivation #icandothis #youcandoit #rainydaypickmeup #mclairdmedicine

Studying as a naturopathic doctor looks like this.... 😳🤓💪did you know that the Doctor of Naturopathy degree program requires more than 3000 hours of classroom training and 1200 hours of clinical experience? This is compiled into a 4-year curriculum after 4 years of a completed undergrad degree with pre-med requirements. Your are in good hands with a Naturopathic Doctor! Our medicine is evidence based and with our extensive education, we are the experts in drug-herb interactions. Currently I'm studying for an extensive prescribing exam that will widen my scope of practice in Ontario to better help my patients with tools such as #bioidenticalhormones. Wish me luck! You can see from the picture that I have a lot to get through still! #medicallytrained #naturallyfocused #doctorofnaturopathy #neverendinglearning #mclairdmedicine

Holding up my end of the green deal! Did you? #natmedweek #greenmedicine #mclairdmedicine

Healthy habit #1: Go GREEN this week- foods that are green generally have high amounts of essential nutrients, aid in lowering your pH (alkalinizing the body for optimal physiological processes), proven with specific #greenfoods at therapeutic doses to be helpful to combat certain disease processes and aid in daily detoxification. How many times do you eat something green each day? Challenge: aim to eat green three times per DAY this week. Start adding collard greens to your smoothies, choosing green juice at the coffee shop, trying a new unknown green at the grocery store or adding chlorophyll to your water daily as examples. If you feel like it share what you have done below to inspire others to do the same. #greenmedicine #natmedweek #naturopathicmedicine #naturallyfocused #medicallytrained #mclairdmedicine

Happy Naturopathic Medicine Week! From May 8-14th, I will be sharing info about Naturopathic Medicine, what I do as an ND professionally and hopefully inspire you to explore naturopathic medicine for yourself (if you haven't already done so) or encourage others to for themselves to better their quality of life. Please ask any and all of your questions along the way either as responses to my posts or in person by booking an appointment for a complimentary 15 minute meet and greet (I would love to meet you!). To begin, I would like to inspire you to 7 healthy habits for the 7 days of ND week. We hear these tips all of the time in magazines, Dr. Oz, the news... but we never actually apply them. So this is your week! Stay tuned !#medicallytrained #naturallyfocused #naturopathicmedicine #natmedweek #mclairdmedicine
