How thankful are you that your body automatically inhales and exhales for our oxygen supply? You probably have never thought about this! But our amazing nervous system ensures we breath regularly, even while we are unconscious and sleeping (thank goodness!) but what we don't realize is how our emotional well being, affected most often by chronic stress, constant productivity with a lack of rest and the "2017 juggling act of life", can significantly influence our breathing quality. In this photo, I'm using an app called #innerbalance which guides the breath in a regular rhythm directly associated to my heart rate (reason for the wire connected to my earlobe). By spending 3-15 minutes every day performing simple deep breathing (example: inhale for 5 counts and exhale for 7 counts) studies have shown an increase in your ability to focus, listen and sleep, with a decrease in anxiety, fatigue and depression over 6-9 weeks of using this #heartmath device! The best part is you don't need any fancy equipment (although this app really helps to focus for a set amount of time), all you need is your lungs and a tiny bit of time. So who needs an extra excuse to have a bit more chocolate in your life? The key factor to making chocolate healthy for you is to avoid any chocolate with added refined sugar and dairy - ie the beloved milk chocolate and replace this with raw cacao. Benefits of raw cacao: more than 300 phytochemicals and nearly four times the antioxidant capacity of regular dark chocolate, it enhances micro circulation which is important in fighting wrinkles but also the maintenance of brain function and memory, it's been proven to have mood enhancing abilities by releasing endorphins and serotonin, enhances glucose metabolism and also helps to maintain a healthy blood pressure. Of course raw cacao is not proven to treat these conditions as a solo therapy, but could be helpful to incorporate into a comprehensive health prescription. Try making this chocolate pudding at home: 3 late avocadoes, 1/4 cup raw cacao, 3-6 tbsp of coconut milk, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 2tsp coconut oil and 2 tbsp raw honey. Blend together in a blender on high until smooth, refrigerate for 30 minutes and enjoy! You may have already heard of spotify - an online music app offering any genre or mood you can think of - including a feature for beats to motivate you when running. The app will detect the pace that you are walking or running and calibrate the song choices to your specific tempo!
