McDougall Mill on the shore of the Bonnechere River in Renfrew, Ontario.

Thank you to each and every person who made last night's Annual General Meeting a success! The museum board and staff was delighted to see so many people come out and support Renfrew's museum. Guest Speaker Terry Currie, local historian and author, took us on a journey through time and discussed Scottish and Irish settlers of the area - a great time to reflect as we approach 150 years of Canada. If you want to get involved with the museum, don't hesitate to contact us! #McDougallMillMuseum #Renfrew #SettlerHistory #AGM2017 🇨🇦

For today's #FrewFounderFriday we are highlighting Charlotte Whitton! A visit by Charlotte Whitton was always an event for Renfrew. Charlotte Elizabeth Hazeltyne Whitton was born in Renfrew on March 8, 1896. Not many know that as a little girl, only five feet tall, in Renfrew long ago, she was enough of a favourite among hockey players of the great hockey team called the Renfrew Millionaires, that on her 13th birthday, they took her to a hockey game. A graduate of Renfrew Collegiate Institute, Miss Whitton went on to become one of the best students to enter Queens University. She entered with 6 scholarships and left with a Masters degree and medals in English, history and teaching. In 1922, she became private secretary to Tom Low, MP. In 1934, she was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire and was awarded the Jubilee Medal, and more. In 1950, she was elected the first woman controller of the City of Ottawa. She has left her nearest opponent 7,000 votes behind. Her death in early 1975 was deeply mourned. She willed many of her possessions to the #McDougallMillMuseum - she was buried in Renfrew. There will never be another Charlotte. "She was dynamic and aggressive and ready to take on anyone." #CharlotteWhitton #FirstWomanMayor #OttawaValley #OttawaPolitics #OttawaValley #Renfrew #RenfrewHistory #StoryOfRenfrew

For today's #FrewFounderFriday we are highlighting Augustus L. Handford. He was one of Renfrew's best known photographers, and he has left a priceless legacy though his pictures. He saw history in the making and he recorded it, whether it was a disaster, the building of a new section of town, or simply street scenes of the moment. He had one endearing habit: many of his photographs include a small boy in the foreground, a fact which became something of a trademark. This was his son, Ed. In 1895 he set up a studio in the McAndrew building across from Pedlow's store. By 1903 the Handford's began construction on what was to become known as the Handford Block on Raglan street. In summer of 2016, the museum came into possession of many pieces from the Handford studio, including photography development equipment. Come and see it in the museum! #Handford #McDougallMillMuseum #Photography #EarlyPhotography #PhotographyInTheValley #HandfordBlock #RaglanStreet #Renfrew #HandfordPhoto #StoryOfRenfrew
