Sometimes it takes a small flame to ignite a massive fire. Falling flat with the first single, a sizzling B-side would make a household name for this caramel crooner. The top 10 song was "ASCENSION (DON'T EVER WONDER)" and the artist name... was @maxwell. A soulful falsetto who rivaled and revived R&B music fathers of the past. Inner city ears fluttered with the release of his debut album Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite in April '96. This pioneering collection is credited to cutting the ribbon along with @erykahbadu @missjillscott & D'angelo on a new genre of music known as "neo-soul". His refreshing soul came from nowhere...LITERALLY (He was discovered while homeless on the streets of New York). The suave dazzle of Maxwell even lured fans back to what they missed in the very sexy first single "...TIL THE COPS COME KNOCKIN'" which eventually went Top 20 on R&B charts. Pushed more by two latter Top 20 hits (the cool "SUMTHIN SUMTHIN'" & "WHENEVER WHEREVER WHATEVER"), the album easily became double platinum, his biggest seller, and to many his best body of work. The name Maxwell has meant more to Black America besides coffee for more than 20 years and it all started here. Pretty "suite" huh?
