I'm super stoked to kick off my 10 favorite albums from 2017! Last year each album was reimagined as a postage stamp, and this year we're rolling with matches 🔥 If you kept up with last years list or are subscribed to my music newsletter (manila-folders.com or visit link in bio), you'll know that I listen to a lot of different music. So get ready for a good mix of genres and great music ✌🏼
To kick things off, we've got Father John Misty's “Pure Comedy.” I'll be honest in admitting though, not ranking this album higher is my only regret from this year's list. Josh had said that this album is a reflection of how he has felt his whole life, and that he's been “refining these ideas for a long time.” This certainly shows through in “Leaving LA” which is a 13 minute track with 10 verses that he wrote over the course of several years and becomes entirely introspective by the end. Let's not forget the 1,850 word essay Josh also released with the record. Look it up and give it a read. Or subscribe to Manila Folders since I'll share it soon (when the list concludes). Bears, man.
