Here is the planet Mars. The “Red Planet”. The red color is due to iron oxide(the metallic rocks on Mars are rusting). Mars formed 4.5 billion years ago. Galileo was the first person to observe Mars through a telescope, in 1609. The planet was was named after the Roman god of war(Ares). The two moons that orbit Mars are Phonos(“fear”), and Deimos(“panic”). They’re named after the twin gods(Panic & Fear) who accompanied Ares into battle. Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the second smallest planet in the solar system after Mercury. On average, Mars is 142 million miles(229 kilometers) from the Sun and 140 million miles(225 million kilometers) from Earth. It takes the planet a 687 days to orbit the Sun. The mass of the red planet is 6.42*10^23. Mars is shaped like an oblate spheroid(like Earth). Mars is only 53% the size of Earth and has 37.5% of the gravity Earth has. The exact circumference of Mars around the equator is about 13,300 miles(21,343 km). Pole to pole, Mars is only 13,200 miles(21,244 km). The diameter is 4,222 miles(6,794 km). Most of the atmosphere on Mars is carbon dioxide and is so thin that water can’t exist in liquid form(only exists in ice or water vapor). Mars lacks an ozone which causes the surface of Mars receiving a lethal dose of radiation every time the Sun rises. The average temperature on Mars is -81 degrees fahrenheit and can range from -205 degrees fahrenheit in the winter and 72 degrees fahrenheit in the summer. Both Mars and Earth share similar seasons because both planets tilt on their axis. A day on Mars is 24 hours and 37 minutes. However, the seasons on Mars are twice as long as Earth’s due to it’s orbit. The land surface between Mars and Earth is about the same. Mars has no magnetic field which indicates that it doesn’t have a molten metal core, like Earth. There’s some evidence suggesting that Mars did have one, and it experienced reversals. Mar’s crust is thicker than Earth’s and is made up of one piece.
