Our 3rd #HeroOfTheWeek post features our very own president @imicoupe and our wonderful volunteering sec @gabrielleshih. These two spoke a bit about why all our #Marrow volunteers are heroes and the impact that volunteering through @ukmarrow has had on the @anthonynolancharity stem cell register!
The most rewarding thing about volunteering with Marrow is being able to follow the process from stopping students as they walk by, to having them signed up to the Anthony Nolan register in only about 10 minutes. It really hit home that every person you sign up is a potential lifesaver in the future when we saw Jacob Sayers, who signed up at a Marrow event last year, donate his stem cells and give somebody a second chance at life. I am always amazed at the dedication shown by Marrow volunteers in raising awareness and money for Anthony Nolan, for example just last month a UCL Marrow volunteer and the RUMSBC cycled from London to Paris in under 24 hours and raised nearly £4000! I love organising events with the committee to reach even more students because most of the time people are more than willing to give a swab, but simply haven’t heard of the register before. We’re hoping to sign up 500 UCL students this academic year, which I think is doable considering there are more than 40,000 of us. We’re also determined to make a success of UCL Marrow to do our bit to reduce the disparity between the number of white and BAME people on the register, because we are such a wonderfully diverse student community.
A lot of people don’t realise that there are Marrow groups at universities across the UK, and considering the charity only recruits people between the ages of 16 to 30 onto the register, our hard work is really important to the Anthony Nolan register. For example, last year Marrow groups signed up 15,000 people and so far over 1000 people signed up by Marrow have donated their stem cells to give someone a second chance at life. I never fail to be amazed by how much time and effort Marrow volunteers will give in the name of getting those swabs, even with busy student lives going on in the background. #HeroWeek #Volunteering #Lifesavers #AnthonyNolan
