11 year old #MarleyDias @iammarleydias,is the founder of #1000BlackGirlBooks, a Philadephia-based book drive born from her frustration with the books she was assigned in school. "'What are you going to do about it? my mom asked. And I told her I was going to start a book drive, and a specific book drive, where black girls are the main characters in the book and not background characters or minor characters. So far Marley has collected 400 books- nearly halfway to her goal of 1,000. Find out how you can help her reach her goal @grassrootsfound We love it! #marleydias #bookdrive #excellence #inspiration #blackgirlmagic #blackgirlsrock #beautiful #girlpower

Today’s girl is Marley Dias: 3/Jan/2005-. She’s a young American activist and feminist, who launched the campaign #1000BlackGirlBooks after a desire to read more (kids) books where black girls are the main characters. She has, with the help of Dr. Lauren Wells, created a online resource (search: 1000 black girl books) for others to be able to find books of all different reading levels that have black girls as the main character. She also had a donation campaign to receive copies of many of these books which have been shipped to the children’s book drive in Jamaica. #a_woman_a_day #feminism #MarleyDias #art #drawing

In honor of National Caribbean American Heritage Month, RRH SOCA will be presenting RRH SOCA Stars every week in June. These are Caribbean individuals excelling in business, entertainment, education, arts and more.
At just 13 years of age Marley Dias @iammarleydias is an activist and author. Marley (named after reggae singer Bob Marley) was born in Philadelphia to a Jamaican mother and Cape Verdean father. At the age of 11, frustrated Marley complained to her mother that all of her mandatory reading books were about white boys and dogs. In 2015 Dias decided to a launch a campaign called #1000BlackGirlBooks. Her goal was to collect and donate 1,000 books that featured black girls as the main character. Today Marley has collected over 9,000 books. Many of these books have been sent to a children's book drive in Jamaica. The #1000BlackGirlBooks campaign has called public attention to the lack of diversity in children's literature. Earlier this year Marley’s first book, Marley Dias Gets It Done: And So Can You!, you was released. In the book Dias speaks to kids about her passion for making our world a better place, and how to make their dreams come true!
Marley Dias is a RRH SOCA STAR!
