Cardio is necessary, especially when you have a lot of weight to lose. However, resistance training is MANDATORY, in my opinion, especially for the morbidly obese. Muscle shaped your body and makes you appear smaller. Nobody is looking at your scale. They're looking at you!

Muscle requires a calorie surplus so on maintenance days I work large muscle groups like back or legs. Muscle also requires more calories than fat to sustain, which builds your metabolism. .
More importantly, strength training gave me goals outside of the scale or running. I remember when I stayed at 263 pounds for months but my squat went up 30 pounds! A few weeks later, I dropped nine pounds.
