Writers from #marginalised communities often find writing #workshops inaccessible because they cannot fund them. Workshops can be indispensable tools for #writers. Feedback and support from other writers is invaluable when it comes to improving your #craft. The Selkie does not think such an opportunity should be reserved only to those who can afford it. ⠀

Which is why we started the New Voices Workshop (#NVW) project. NVW was founded by Lis Mesa, and will be spearheaded by her, Sonali Misra and Chelsea Welsh to #mentor #unpublished writers for the New Voices selection.⠀

The NVW team will work closely with up to two NEW writers per month to help them develop a piece. Writers must be unpublished and from a marginalised background in-line with The Selkie’s mission statement. To apply, you need to email your pitch to the NVW team at newvoices@theselkie.co.uk.⠀

Dirty Computer”
, the new #album from Janelle #Monáe, could easily be too on-the-nose. “#Americans”, the closing track, lists the #marginalised people in #contemporary America in a #voice over: “Until #women can get equal pay for equal work...until same-#gender loving people can be who they are...until #black people can come home from a police stop without being #shot in the head...until poor #whites can get a shot at being successful...until #Latinos and Latinas don't have to run from #walls...this is not my #America.

Winter is a tough time to be out on the street. But Big Issue vendors are still working – even if it's cold and rainy. If you see a vendor please consider buying a magazine from them. Every sale makes such a difference at this time of year. 👍

The LKMco team came together on a hot July afternoon to talk about the future of #research at LKMco. We discussed the importance of telling the stories of #youngpeople and those who work with them to make the case for change, including those #marginalised groups who might otherwise be forgotten. We agreed that polarisation in #education rarely benefits anyone and instead want to shine a light on nuance and complexity to bring together those with different points of view and help them move on.

We were excited, if a little daunted, about the topics we want to pursue, for example: children’s equal access to opportunities, such as residentials and cultural enrichment; the opportunities #EdTech offers the sector; and the impact of funding cuts and #socialinequality on marginalised young people. We have an appetite to revisit previous research, such as our #SEND and teacher workforce reports, to continue the conversation further, and we want to pursue relationships with a range of partner organisations to broaden our audience. We also talked about how we could equip policymakers and those in education with the tools to make better decisions.

We go forward acknowledging the need to consider what we need to stand for and value, the importance of challenging our own and others’ assumptions and that at the heart of what we do is the drive for #socialjustice.

I had the opportunity to take part in a week long intensive with @tearaustralia on the issues of poverty and justice. It was such a fantastic and interesting week that I just
didn't want to end! I am continually stirred up by the work which others do through partnering with local and international communities to respond to these issues through relief, development and advocacy.

We work with the poorest communities in #Australia and internationally, to support and empower local communities, women, men, and families. In the spirit of Mary MacKillop, @MaryMacKillopToday's focus is on building dignity through education, health, financial inclusion and livelihoods; one example of which is our Community Grants Program. We partner with organisations to support Australia's most vulnerable and #marginalised people to improve their lives through education in all its forms. This, the Community Grants Program, has invested grants in over 600 life-changing projects across the country since 1995 and just last week, our team felt privileged to visit one of our partners, @theglenrehab - a special place on the #CentralCoast. Our Partnerships and Performance Group Leader wrote about her visit on our blog!

Three Days of Darkness :: The Shame Game

As the second part of this series designed to prepare you for eclipse season by relinquishing another chunk of thy shadowy shit, today we peer at our shame.

Oh the dark weed that takes root within us and demands we hide ourselves beneath it. Shame springs from where we have been marginalised, taunted or degraded simply for who or how we are. It does not take hold because there is something inherently wrong with us.

Rather we have been schooled by others in the parts of Self best hidden away, unaccepted before they had found their rightful place within us, never allowed to find their truest expression in our lives. A gentle reminder at this point to back away from the blame button. Fingers down, darklings. This is ALL about you.

Shame fills the gap between who we want (or are told) to be and where we find ourselves. It is this vast unwieldy abyss that we cloak ourselves in. Shame coils deep inside our idea of how we are perceived by the world, especially if we have experienced it as a cold or judgemental, forbidding or dangerous place. For some shame is intrinsically linked to trauma, that we will only be seen in the context of what happened to us, so we hide that away too.

Shame is either adding a dark unresolved weight to your shadow self or blocking your light. So riddle me this darklings, today's thinking points to scrawl through and keep for the dark moon. And again: if any answers veer towards blame, redo yesterday's homework.

What parts of myself do I keep hiddden?
Why do I keep them hidden?
What am I ashamed of in my life?
Why am I ashamed of this?
What am I ashamed of in myself?
Why am I ashamed of this?
What do I think of myself?
How do I talk to myself?

Our secret shames remain the trigger in us (and others) and a slippery sucker to spot. Remember who you were before its claws grabbed hold. Remind yourself of how far you have come since then, not how far you think you still have to go. Repeat daily, for the rest of your life or until symptoms subside.

Shame is the lie someone told you about yourself
