Radial symmetry is the mathematical term for symmetry that is repeated around a single main axis, so that the shape can be divided into similar halves by any plane that contains the main axis.
According to the mathematician @marcusdusautoy , bees have evolved to seek flowers by recognizing radial symmetry. The basic building block of their hives is also a hexagon, which has six sided radial symmetry.
Oddly enough, human women in every part of the world also generate radial symmetry when making lace. It seems to be a deeply satisfying instinct that transcends cultural differences.
The human body is also built on radial (bilateral) symmetry. It's found everywhere in nature, from the galactic level to the atomic level of scale. This caused thinkers like Buckminster Fuller to hypothesize that symmetry is a principle of how the material world functions, and that implies that fairness and reciprocity are primary, self-reinforcing social principles because of the deeper underlying material principle of symmetry.
Theoretical physicist Nassim Haramein has mathematical proofs that show that the structure of space-time is actually symmetrical. So given that the actual framework of reality is symmetrical, and practically every living organism on earth is symmetrical, it appears that evolution favors symmetry. It's an idea first popularized by Fuller, that this applies just as much to human culture, constructions, economics, and society as it applies to the nonhuman world.
