Summer of STEM day 18: V I E W // Well as much as I want to share this beautiful Familia Sagrada sunset view the second picture was also my view this morning.
-
Yesterday at 7 PM my sister and I were touring the museum of Prado in Madrid when she got a text from @gottagotospace wanting to know if we were safe because he hadn't heard from me in a while. This was the first we heard of the Barcelona attack.
-
I'm sure most of you know the details but on Wednesday night there was an explosion 75 miles from Barcelona. Thursday at 5PM a van drove into a crowd of people for 500 meters and this attack killed 13 people and left over 100 injured.
-
As soon as we read what happened we hopped back on the bus and headed back to our hotel. We had flights to Barcelona but had to decide what to do after the events. We decided that we weren't going to succumb to the fear and stop living our lives.
-
Later that night I woke up an hour after falling asleep with my heart racing, knots in my stomach and fear. Even though we were in Madrid my mind went to a dark place and I'll just leave it at that. A couple hours later I woke up at 3:45 AM to get ready and one of my first texts was to John (since it was 10PM for him) to ask if he heard anything about the bombing. This is when I realized how much of a privileged life I've had.
-
I never really thought of myself as having had that much of a privileged life since I've always had to fight for everything (being a female and hispanic). However, this was the first time in my life where my first thought in the morning was, "has there been another attack?" Yes, we've all seen on the news the different bombings and attacks but as I told John, to actually be in the same country and then to have plans to travel to that same city twelve hours later is a crazy feeling.
-
So here I am, in the same city that was attacked a little over a day ago praying and standing up for it. Hoping to prove that love conquers all. My final thoughts on this are: We will not be afraid. We will not be silenced. We are resilient. We are unstoppable. Good will always rise. Pray for this beautiful city, be vigilant and be grateful for everyday you have.

there is no empirical evidence to support racism. there is also no moral equivalence between white supremacists and those who fight for equal rights. so if you are still trying to defend nazis to us, you’re not only a piece of shit, you’re DUMBER than an actual piece of fecal matter. ❤️✌️❤️✌️ when hate is loud, love cannot be silent. rise. engage. #RESIST.

Taken at the #marchforscience in DC. It was cold and rainy and gloomy but people showed up. 🍕🔬📚 Excited to share some things on here soon!

Day 18: V I E W🏞️ There's a lot of talk about uncertainty in scientists' predictions🔮 about #climate. .
Do we really know if the climate is changing? Are humans actually having an impact? There's so much uncertainty! How could we ever KNOW?
.
But how "uncertainty" is used in everyday conversation is much different than how it's used in #science🔎. Kinda like how "model" means something different too.
.
Climate models aren't beautiful people posing in front of a polar bear on a glacier🏔️🕺; they're computer simulations that make predictions about how our home, #Earth🌏, will respond to #climatechange.
.
Certainty isn't binary, certain or uncertain, but instead, a sliding scale.📈 Models have hundreds of variables📊 at multiple scales, from the regional or landscape scale, all the way down to the molecular scale.
.
Some variables can be measured with high accuracy, (i.e temperature🌡️) but others are a little harder to measure and therefore have to be estimated (the amount of carbon in #Arctic soils for example).
.
There are a lot of ways to reduce the uncertainty in those estimations though. And for today's #summerofstem challenge, I wanted to show y'all one way climate modelers on the #NGEEarctic team are trying to do that.🤓
.
This is a bird's-eye-view of one of our "polygonal tundra" sites in #Alaska. Those shapes💠 you see on the landscape are called ice-wedge polygons & each one is about 6-10 m across. They're formed by the freezing & thawing of ice beneath the surface which causes physical movement of the soil above.
.
These formations cause variations in variables📉 that we measure for our models, but they also provide a repeatable unit across the landscape that we can use to scale up our measurements.📏
.
For example, it's impossible to measure the amount of carbon everywhere.😦 That would be highly uncertain. But by choosing 10 representative polygons & evaluating the variability in carbon across those 10, we can then more accurately extrapolate that data to make predictions about how much carbon can be found across the landscape.😄
.
The climate is changing. Humans have been the main driver of this change. Can we move on to finding solutions?💪

Love these prints of @womeninstem by @alonglastname - they were created to connect the #womensmarch and #marchforscience for the #beyondcurie project. Another great way of highlighting women in science and engineering similar to my @womenofsci campaign. #graphicdesign #engineering #science #empowerment

Logan and I are so blessed and thankful to share that we are expecting baby boy Garrett in September! It's been a wild ride filled with much loss, many hormones, one d and c, 6 failed IUI's,months of accupuncture and counseling, 2 rounds of ovarian hyperstimulation and egg retrievals, ICSI, embryo genetic testing, and last but most important, one successful frozen embryo transfer :-). We're so thankful for our village of support of friends and family and healthcare providers who helped us get here. And so much thanks to science for pioneering the way to make these miracle babies! We truly believe that science and awareness will pave the way for easier treatments, more affordable and comfortable procedures, and better access for all patients and couples struggling to build their families. For so many, a world without science is a world without hope ❤️. #marchforscience #bebrave #morethan1in8 #resolve #thelittleembryothatcould #ivfwarrior #wenicknamedhimpetri
