Regrann from @xelissa.games - This past month I got back into painting🎨 just a little bit. It had been a couple years since I last really painted. Here are investigators Akachi, Kate, and Harvey from Mansions of Madness 2nd Edition!

👻Mansions of Madness👻————————————————
A game of ‘exploration, mystery and horror’ set in FFG’s Lovecraftian ‘Arkham Files’ universe. It’s a co-op dungeon crawler style game where a group of intrepid investigators explore and solve mysteries, coming up against various nasties, puzzles and challenges————————————————
The game is driven by an app, which pushes the game right up to the boundary of analog vs digital. If the game was any more reliant on the app, it might as well have just been a video game. This isn’t a problem for me, but your mileage may vary!————————————————
Investigators take turns performing 2 actions - such as moving, exploring, interacting with stuff or attacking monsters - and then the app takes over, potentially resolving random events or attacking with the bad guys————————————————
The game has some great features. The app is generally great and manages the game and makes it really accessible. You really only need one player to have skimmed the rules and you’re off————————————————
It’s all really immersive and thematic, with ambient music, flavour text and sound effects. The app can also work behind the scenes randomising events, puzzles, monsters and the map, adding to the replayability of scenarios————————————————
The mystery and exploration element is also great, with the map hidden and the actual objective of the game only slowly revealed over the course of play————————————————
I find it in a bit of a weird spot for me though. The game play itself, mechanically speaking, is very casual, light and nothing amazing. This is a game about the experiences created around the table, not pulling off some masterful and strategic turn. And that’s fine - I’m just not sure it holds up, over what can be a very long game. Some of the scenarios are advertised as 4-6 hours! I haven’t been brave enough to try those yet!————————————————
I’m not in need of expansions yet - I’ve played 4 times and all with just the first scenario. But it must be said that they are quite expensive. Of course miniatures + app development = $$$, but I still feel wary of wading further into it

SWIPE for spoiler! Tonight we played the long scenario of Mansions of Madness: Streets of Arkham. This game continues to uphold its first place in my ranking because of the heavy theme it delivers!
