🎤 Just another #mangrovemonday at Sainte Luce Reserve! Our volunteers and staff regularly collect and replant mangrove seeds in order to strengthen and protect the riverbank 🌱🐦🐸🐊 This year we have replanted over 7000 propagules surrounding the reserve. Mangroves are among the most productive and biologically complex ecosystems on earth, supporting a huge #biodiversity of animals and vegetation.

Happy #MangroveMonday! 🌱Learn why mangroves are essential to our environment with our friends at @miamiwaterkeeper.

The Madagascar Kingfisher (Corythornis vintsioides) can often be seen alongside the river which borders Sainte Luce Reserve. This bird relies upon a healthy river system in order to survive and destruction of #mangroves can have a detrimental impact on it. Our volunteers are constantly on the look out for mangrove propagules which we use to regenerate the riverbank.

~ I love getting lost in the mangroves ~

With incredible adaptations to survive in high salt conditions as well as the constantly fluctuating water level the tides bring each day, these beautiful trees that grow at the water's edge create nursery habitat for an amazing diversity of juvenile ocean animals.

I had the privilege of observing little fish species like barracudas, sergeant majors, needle fish, mullet, parrotfish, snapper, and more. And invertebrates like hermit crabs, sponges, comb jellies, oysters, hydroids, anemones, and more.
