Mali in the City III - Elephas Maximus by Sharon Muir (detail, rotated clockwise) (14 August 2012). Instagram in-built camera app using iPhone 4 @ fixed 29mm (35mm equiv) and f/2.8, auto exposure. Sierra filter and frame.

Sponsored by Gribbles Veterinary, Sharon’s design addresses the loss of rainforest habitat for the Asian elephant, encouraging us to be aware of how fragile ecosystems can be.

I liked how the design on the ear resembled a miniature landscape when rotated clockwise. And we are not even aware of it being a sculpture any more…

Mali in the City II - Spot by Steve Monk (detail) (14 August 2012). Instagram in-built camera app using iPhone 4 @ fixed 29mm (35mm equiv) and f/2.8, auto exposure. Lo-fi filter and frame.

Sponsored by the Richmond Football Club, Steve’s design was intended to be a novel way of representing two endangered species - elephant and tiger - in the one image.

Mali in the City I - Eltham Copper Butterfly Story by Karen Rawady (detail) (14 August 2012). Instagram in-built camera app using iPhone 4 @ fixed 29mm (35mm equiv) and f/2.8, auto exposure. Hefe filter and frame.

Sponsored by Healesville Sanctuary, the design draws attention to the local Eltham Copper Butterfly, a threatened species. When viewed as a whole, this particular Mali sculpture tells the story of the fascinating interaction between the plant ‘sweet bursaria’, the ant ‘notoncus’ and the butterfly’s larvae.

I created this pattern for the Mali in the City Artist comp. Years later and I still like it. 😊 Can you see what the pattern is made of?😁 #design #illustration #graphicdesign #illustrative #maliinthecity #pattern #wallpaper #print #repeat #texture #designs #colour #inspiration
