#AtTheBench: And here’s my Day 5 and final work for @ArohaKnits’ #initiateknitdesign, a 10-day workshop focused on guiding knitters through the process of designing their own knitwear patterns.
My first draft is a doozy! 😱 I’m using a trial version of @Stitchmastery to chart my lace as I have to cut and flip the lace for insertions between stockinette for diagonal orientation. And boy has this been a task! But SM is really helping me to see how to go from idea to chart to complete pattern seamlessly. As this is a center-out construction, this shawl will begin with a #provisionalcaston, making the first side and then picking up the live stitches from the cast-on to complete the other side. So no grafting or seaming this time around!
As I learned from my swatches, I’ll definitely be going down a needle size or two from a 4mm/US 6. I also may change the stockinette to garter stitch, which would eliminate the garter ridge elements. I’ll decide on that stitch change after I complete the draft sample to see how the piece works in it’s full form. 😌 My #HiyaHiyaneedles 🐼 have really made this project enjoyable, especially when working the lace.
For a recap, my inspiration is #KinnethArameri, an Amn Royal and mother to the character, #YeineDarr from #TheHundredThousandKingdoms in the #TheInheritanceTrilogy by #NKJemisin. This stole will be the first piece in the collection.
While I still have much to learn about #knitwear design, this course really helped me to see that yes, I CAN design a knitting pattern from my own inspirations! 😊 This has been an empowering experience and I can’t wait to cast on!
