Returning the favour when people are mean to you is almost like a knee-jerk reaction for most of us (guilty of this in the past). But Allah SWT, through His Beloved Messenger, Rasulullah SAW teaches us to show kindness and forgiveness to people who do evil unto us. Why?
Allah azza wa jall said in Surah Ta-Ha, Ayah 44: فَقُولَا لَهُ قَوْلًا لَيِّنًا لَعَلَّهُ يَتَذَكَّرُ أَوْ يَخْشَىٰ "And speak to him with gentle speech that perhaps he may be reminded or fear [Allah]." We cannot change people. Only Allah can. But we can lead by example. We can show people what it means to be a Muslim, a servant of Allah. We can show people what it means to have submitted to Allah SWT. We can show people a fraction of Allah's Rahma with His Rahma and permission as our strength by seeing through the illusion which is the evil act of the creation and seeing Allah, the Creator, who is testing us and rooting for us to pass the test and who has the answers if we only ask. When we can do this, we can forgive and be kind.
Many will see that we are weak and stupid and see us as a pushover. But this is true strength of character. Those who love Allah dearly and understand the way Allah works will respect you and love you for it. Those who Allah wants to awaken will be inspired by it. But at the end of the day, it doesn't matter. Like Mufti Ismail Menk said: "When you strive in the way of the Almighty, you don't worry about being accepted or having approval of others. You know your priority." May Allah grant us understanding. May He gift us with the qualities of our beloved role model, Prophet Muhammad (SAW). May He provide us with #beneficialknowledge and the gift of #wisdom, #taqwa, #tawakkul, #sabr, #alridabilqada and #shukr so that He will be pleased with us and place us amongst the ones who are privileged to see His Face when we return Home to Him in the Hereafter. Allahumma aameen.
