"Sometimes it is the people no one can imagine anything of who do the things no one can imagine." - Alan Turing. I remember being 5 and put in the bottom classes and told that I was just slower than the other kids. I hated it! I made me feel like I had already lost because I didn't get things as fast as other kids. That feeling lasted until my passion for mathematics was ignited at age 8. I had just returned back from a family trip to USA. It was there that I witnessed something that would forever change my life. My 19-year old cousin seemed to just play computer games ALL day. I was shocked that he was "allowed" to do this as my mum only allowed me to play computer games on the weekends😭😭. I asked him "how he gets to play so many games", he said "because I study computer science and we make computer games in class, so this is research. After hearing this, I decided that I too was going to make computer games!!
I went and declared to my mum that "I am going to make computer games for Nintendo!". My mother thought learning to use computers would be a good so she took me to the library - not knowing much about computer programming - got me books on Artificial Intelligence. I understood nothing - mind you, I was just 8. But what I did notice were beautiful symbols, which I found out were used in the language of Mathematics.
I decided that even if my teachers couldn't imagine me achieving anything, I was going to be great at maths so I could make computer games!! I studied every chance I could. So many times my mum had to literally take my books away so that I'd sleep at night.😎
17 years of hard work lead to me doing something I never imagined: finishing my PhD at 25 by deriving a new set of equations to describe the value of a bet on a weather outcome. That is what equations 5.24 and 5.25 represent. These equations acts as a reminder to believe in myself even when others can't imagine me being able to do it. - Dr Broni-Mensah #imagine #realdoctor #drbroni #myfirstlove #mathsporn #lovemaths #numbers #staywoke #quotes #doctorate #doctoratedegree #living #makemyparentsproud #makemyselfproud #phd #determined #focused #friday #derivatives #economics #geeking
