Got out my new 2017 @northwindsurf Hero yesterday. It was briefly 4.0 before rigging up to a 4.8 Idol (both sails are amazing!) but lots of fun to be had a Dougs beach with the new gear. @fanaticwindsurf #nolimitz #makanifins @hamptonswatersports @windsurfingnow #windsurf #windsurfing

And the winner of the International Windsurf Tour Makani Fins OBX 20km Long Distance Wind Races (two) in Avon,North Carolina last weekend was @poor_tyson!!! 😎🏆💪There were 178 competitors out there and that is not a number seen often here in the states! Way to go fast homie! Thanks @sambittner for the great photo and all you do for this sport!! Love it!!! #windsurfracing #IWT #makanifins #waytoshred

Kai's tip for the weekend: Balance part 2 ... Oc1, Surfski, and SUP are very similar to bikes in that with more speed, the easier it is to balance. The more speed you have the easier it will be to control and balance your boat/board. However, with all that speed going one way, if a force were to hit you perpendicularly, say a bump/swell, it will "throw" you a little more than if you were going at a slower speed. So the key is to have as much speed as you can and stay as smooth as possible. When you're going downwind, that means trying not to fight the swells too much if you have a lot of speed, and kind of zigzag your way through swells. You have to anticipate the swells and if you know one is coming from the right or left, you have to slightly shift your weight to counteract it and stay stable. See you guys on the water

Late post...but was a long, tough, hot, flat, up current race...but was glad I had these hammers 🔨 to back me up. Ended up coming in 4th, which is the best I've ever done and the club has done in a very long time. Was lucky enough to have my @vestpac filled with some @firstendurance EFS PRO, and my @virusintl compression long sleeve and pants to get me through the race. #reeelax #littlebit #pressure #squeeze #gogogo #walkitin #igotyou #now #meowmeow @mmausio @danbova @a_s_h_roo @tupuria_king @travenormous @tua_cowan

Kai's tip for the weekend: boat speed. Maintaining boat speed is the key to not only going fast, but catching swells. The more boat speed you can keep going from bump to bump, the easier it will be to catch and ride with less effort. When you're first starting it will seem like you're doing a 10sec sprint every 30sec to try and get onto every swell and stay on every swell. As you get better at surfing and finding the little bumps, it becomes easier to maintain boat speed which then makes it easier to surf...it's a vicious cycle. The higher boat speed you can maintain, the easier it will be to surf and conserve energy to get you through the race. When My boat is up and running I do a few ups here and there if I want to jump over waves, but most of the time I'm just keeping the boat moving at a 70-80% effort or sitting to conserve energy and find the next bump. The easiest way to know if you are maintaining boat speed, is to get a GPS, or something that can tell you how fast you're going. What I usually do is set my watch to do a lap/buzz every 1/2 or 1mi, that way I can tell my average speed. You can go to my last post about surfing the wind swell to ground swell, and that's the foundation of keeping your boat speed up, little bump to big bump. So, higher boat speed makes it easier to catch bumps, and catching bumps makes it easier to keep your boat speed... 🔄🔄🔄. So keep that boat speed up and I'll see you guys on the water...

Kai's tip for the weekend: Hydration. Staying hydrated is very important in racing as well as training. Keeping your muscles fueled and hydrated is the key to being able to keep pushing, and to recovering faster. Hydrating before a race is key, because you need to not only saturate your muscles with liquid, but also with electrolytes and other nutrients. The last thing you want to happen in the middle of the race is to cramp, because that is totally preventable. It's also important to hydrate during practice to help with recovery. It honestly isn't hard to bring a little water bottle with you while you are training to drink from between pieces. Depending on what you're doing determines what you need to do. For example, if it's a 8mile downwind, I might just bring a half filled @vestpac to stay hydrated, or just stay hydrated before the race and not bring anything. If it's a flat hot SUP race, I'll definitely bring a full pack. My rule of thumb is, if it's gonna be over 1hr definitely bring water, at least 1 liter. If it's over 1.5hr bring 2L. If it's gonna be less than an hour I usually don't bring a pack with me, or just a half pack. What I like to do is to set my GPS to beep every mile, and when it beeps I usually take a sip if I haven't done so in a while, just to remind myself to keep drinking. Even while training, if it's hard sprints I'll bring a bottle filled with @firstendurance EFS, if it's longer lower intensity pieces I'll just bring some water. It is very important to stay hydrated, while doing any type of training, and you will definitely see the difference when you stay hydrated. See you guys on the water...
