Captain Starling has an enchanted wooden frog that holds some treasure and the key to the chest she searches for. If the frog is stolen it only hops right back to her and if she were to die the frog will digest everything it has in it stomach and turn into an ordinary frog and live out a blessed frog life.
To get the frog to open his mouth she stares into his eyes and strokes him gingerly, whispering a few sweet elvish nothings at him until he smiles and opens wide reveling the contents he carries. Sometimes she finds new things in there that the frog swallowed up on his own, always precious, like he's gifting her. Some like to joke about him being her frog prince but they just mostly wonder how they themselves could coax from her such a sweet smile as the one she bestows the frog.
The original way to have access to the treasure keeping frog is by paying in blood each time he opens his mouth on a prong just under his lip. She chooses love.
When casting the enchantment on the wooden frog the first thing you offer its belly is your blood to give it life and bind it to you.
Instead, Captain Starling found and plucked a bleeding heart plant and kept it in a vase. She put a drop of her blood in the water each night for one full moon cycle. While all the pink and white hearts on the vine where beginning to fade away there was one that had changed to muscle red in colour over time and was so abounding with growth one could almost see it flex.. Or was it just the wind?
She fed the frog that bleeding heart blossom instead. Binding them through life and love, heart and soul, instead of solely blood and pain. Though that is present as well. In fact one could have done a lot of evil with that bleeding heart. Captain Starling has a way about her of turning ignorance and hatred around on itself so that only love ends up shining through, transforming it entirely, miraculously. As if it only really happens because she believes it so.
