Inaugural restaurant review!
Started out with some very nice and reasonably priced martinis at the bar, after a bit of a wait, we were shown to our table. The restaurant is in a big room with dark décor, it felt a bit crowded but not so you'd notice once the food arrived.
I had pigeon breast with gooseberry chutney, bitter chocolate sauce, watercress and blue cheese to start. The pigeon was perfectly cooked for me, but could have been a little rare for others. The gooseberry chutney was a bit too sweet and didn't add much, but I loved the cheese and bitter chocolate sauce, which paired beautifully with the meat and watercress, altogether a great way to start the meal.
The main event was a veal ossobuco with deep fried bone marrow, root vegetables, celeriac purée and madeira jus. Fantastic! The meat came apart really nicely and the jus added an extra dimension, the bone marrow was delicious but may have been a bit greasy for some. The celeriac purée was nice, but got a bit lost among the bigger flavours.
Dessert was a coconut parfait with mango salsa and lemongrass syrup, which was a bit too sweet and slightly underwhelming compared to the rest of it, the lemongrass was very nice but didn't pair particularly well with the mango.
All in all a very good evening, attentive service, a creative and well executed menu and a really good wine list too.
