Pictured in "New York Beauties - Quilts From The Empire State" by Atkins and Tepper. An original design made by Carl Klenicke, Corning, Steuben County, New York. Circa 1900. Pieced silk, faille, taffeta and satin. "Carl Klenicke, a native of Germany, was a tailor in Corning. He made this spectacularly different quilt for his daughter Laura, born in 1879, and his son-in-law Joseph Stenger as a wedding gift. The design is wonderfully original with folk motifs galore. It is a tour de force of pieced work, and it probably was made from scraps left over from the fabrics used in making clothes for his clients". Not many antique quilts have been documented as being made by a man. This is a rare piece of American folk art. See close-up in next post.
