We recently got our hands on the latest bottling of the classic Macallan Sherry Oak 18 year as well as a new limited edition release, Classic Cut. The 18 is still a sherry bomb, through and through, and it will please any die-hard Macallan nut, though it’s now coming across as a bit heavy on the wine barrel influence for us. The Classic Cut, a release of 90,000 bottles, is the first cask strength Macallan in four years. It’s aged in ex-Oloroso sherry casks and carries no age statement. There’s lots of wood on the nose with this one, and on the palate there’s a heavy focus on well-roasted grain. Marshmallow and caramel on the finish is a nice bonus.
