Let’s talk bottle design for a moment. Whether we care to admit it or not, bottle design plays an important role in the whisky buying decision process, especially for those of us just starting out. Now, I will say that the further I venture into the world of whisky, the less I seem to care about factors outside of the liquid itself. But that was not always the case.
The day I decided to purchase my first “real whisky” (whatever that meant at the time), I walked into my local shop with the intention of selecting something unique. I was in a celebratory mood that day and felt ready to move beyond the standard Glenlivet 12 Year Old and Johnnie Walker Black Label I had exhausted over the years stemming from my college days.
At the time, I knew relatively little about flavor so naturally, I was forced to make my own judgements based on what “felt” special. The Glenrothes bottle pictured above hit all the right notes for me. It’s imperfect spherical shape and embossed logo seems to suggest an “I just woke up like this” ethos. To me, it was perfect.
While I no longer make purchasing decisions based on bottle design, I still appreciate a good one when I see it. What are some of your favorite whisky bottle designs? Share your opinions in the comments below...
