Several brand-new images and a behind-the-scenes featurette from “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” have been released; courtesy of Vanity Fair! Several plot and character details for the film were also revealed, including the names of Laura Dern and Kelly Marie Tran’s characters. Dern will play Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo, “a prominent officer in the Resistance”, and while it was revealed that Kelly Marie Tran’s character was named Rose at Star Wars Celebration, we’ve now learned that the full character name is Rose Tico - with the character’s sister Paige also making an appearance in the film. The name of Benicio del Toro’s character, who’s described as “shady” with “unclear allegiances”, will not be revealed in “The Last Jedi” - although director Rian Johnson says the cast and crew refer to him as DJ. Johnson also discussed some of the film’s new locations, including Canto Bight, “a Star Wars Monte Carlo–type environment, a little James Bond–ish, a little ‘To Catch a Thief’. It was an interesting challenge, portraying luxury and wealth in this universe. I was thinking, O.K., let’s go ultra-glamour. Let’s create a playground, basically, for rich assholes.” Finn and Rose head to Canto Bight for a “mission behind enemy lines”. We also learned a little more about Ahch-to, the planet in which Luke Skywalker now calls home. According to Johnson, the planet is home to the first Jedi temple (as many fans previously speculated) and is also occupied by “an indigenous race of caretaker creatures”. Finally, LucasFilm President Kathleen Kennedy revealed that “Star Wars: Episode IX” will begin filming next January! “Star Wars: The Last Jedi“, which stars Daisy Ridley, Mark Hamill, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Carrie Fisher, Peter Mayhew, Anthony Daniels, Jimmy Vee, Domhnall Gleeson, Andy Serkis, Gwendoline Christie, Lupita Nyong’o, Laura Dern, Kelly Marie Tran and Benicio Del Toro, is written and directed by Rian Johnson and hits theaters on December 15th, 2017.
