The common green bottle fly (Lucilia sericata) is well known as a pollinator and for their important use in forensic research. That's right! Forensic scientists have used these flies for years to figure out how long a human corpse has been decomposing, as these flies are the first to arrive on the scene. Lucilia larvae need decaying tissue to survive and hatch in a mere 9 hours, depending on the temperature. They're also used in maggot therapy to help heal wounds! Anyways, I had fun watching this one feed on nectar today.
