Now for the second milestone of the day and this one I'm not pleased with. Today is the 10th anniversary of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the long-awaited and highly anticipated fourth installment of the beloved Indiana Jones film series that saw the return of Steven Spielberg as director, George Lucas as producer, John Williams as composer and of course Harrison Ford as the whip-cracking, ophidiophopic archeology professor/adventurer. Now set during in the 1950s during the cold war, Jones is aided by greaser Mutt Williams (Shia LaBeouf) and former lover Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen) as he tangles with Soviet Agents led by Colonel Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett) as they search for the ancient crystal skull. I was hyped when I saw the trailer for this a decade ago and was glad to see Ford back in action despite his advanced age and even happier hearing Williams' spine chilling, iconic score along with that whip sounds effect. But like The Phantom Menace upon release, we weren't prepared for the infamous, mind-numbing, and childhood-raping fails that would occur such as the drastic shift from the throwback pulp adventure/supernatural formats of the previous films to a 50s sci-fi B movie plot involving interdimensional aliens, Mutt's CGI-ridden Tarzan swings with monkeys, Shia's very presence as the uncharismatic Mutt, the cheesy dialogue, and of course the scene where Indy escape a devastating nuclear blast by hopping into a refrigerator among all sorts of ridiculous plot elements. I know this was a series built on suspension of disbelief, bending genres and delivering escapist entertainment, but this missed what was truly special about the past films and served as nothing more but another cynical cash cow. Loved it or hated it, put your thoughts in the comments.

Happy 30th anniversary to Willow, the cult high fantasy adventure from producer George Lucas and director Ron Howard staring Warrick Davis as the title character, a kind dwarf farmer living in the village of Newwyn who must protect a baby from a evil queen as said child will herald the sorceress' downfall and has the assistance of the young warrior Madmartigan (Val Kilmer, who is billed as the lead star). Before The Lord of the Rings trilogy reined supreme, this film took viewers into a different world and a different time full of mysticism, whimsy, humor, strange creatures, terrifying evil forces and imagination and it has Lucas' and Howard stamp all over it from their shared passion in creating the film's mythology and eye for fantastic elements, and it's all carried through Warrick's charming presence. While it was make a dent upon release, Willow, like fellow beloved Lucasfilm production Labyrinth, has found it's audience through rentals and cable over the years and it's magic is continued to be celebrated.
