Feels like a Low Fat Roubo sort of day. Great tee, Derek! @lowfatroubo #furnituremaker #communityis #lowfatroubo

#lowfatroubo Tinkering around with different size pilot holes drilled on the pillar drill to see which, if any, help to steer a straight hole by hand with an auger bit for dog holes. Result - not much in it tbh. Holes are straight but rough as a Bears' nether regions. Time for plan B

This is my good friend Colin Sullivan age 76. He's an authority on old tools with dates, names and stories in his head that keep me entertained for hours. Colin turned the columns for the wooden screw vice for the #lowfatroubo so had the first go with thread cutter. Yes it is as tough as it looks

#lowfatroubo Of course there are more important things I could be doing this afternoon but none are quite as satisfying as spinning your nuts on a freshly cut thread. #wooden #screwthread #vice

#lowfatroubo Plan B turned out to be drill the first 3" inches with a Famag forstner from @workshopheaven - silky smooth holes - then drill the last 1" with an auger until it bottoms out. Flip the board over and complete the hole. The auger bit roll is of course from @txheritage

#lowfatroubo And bingo. Doesn't look like much but it's progress. Gluing up tomorrow

For #handtoolthursday this week and to get you in the mood for @europeanwoodworkingshow this weekend here's a couple of #lowfatroubo marking gauges. I'll have these, a selection of @badaxe6 saws, some @benchcrafted kit and maybe one or two other little surprises as well. So come and find me in the top barn, roll up your sleeves and try them out. #furnituremaking #cabinetmaking

I had a few DMs recently requesting plans for my #lowfatroubo #moxonvise I usually have plans for everything I make so if you see something you like just ask, they're free. Email me via the website and I'll gladly fire you back a PDF #free #plans #woodworking #woodworkingplans #furnituremaking #furnituremakingcourse #madebyhand #handmade

A repost from @planejoe completing the circle. Always great to see the #lowfatroubo #moxonvise in use especially when it's helping out some new recruits. Nice one Joe. #woodworkingclasses #furnituremakingcourse #fullcircle #cabinetmaking #dovetails #handtools #handmade

With the arrival of a years supply of cut nails from #LeeValley on Saturday morning (that's #Ottawa to #Newhaven in three days btw) it was time for a quick little project this weekend. Managing to use up every inch of space in my travelling #toolchest #japanesetoolbox #cutnails #cabinetmaking #furnituremaking #contemporarycraftpeople #furnituremakingcourse #woodworkingclasses #cedar #lowfatroubo #lewes

That's it my friends, the next #weekender at @robinsonhousestudio is now full. If you blinked and missed out this time you can still sign up for the next #japanesetoolbox class scheduled for 25/26th November. My quest for genuine English Walnut took me to @englishwoodlandstimber yesterday. If you take pride in offering your customers a truly bespoke service where nothing is too much trouble, you'll recognise and appreciate that quality when you become the customer. The folk at EWT aren't happy until you're happy and if that means shifting 10tons of timber to get to the board at the bottom of the pile then so be it. Thanks Paul 👍They've got stock here that will make your head spin with all the possibilities that come from having great quality material to start with. Well worth a visit and while you're there don't forget to ask for the Cancerwise charity box, drop a tenner in it and you can take home a nice pink hi-viz waistcoat but be warned you might have to pose by the knob shaped stack of oak for a mugshot. As a little incentive I'll send a #lowfatroubo T shirt to the first customer to post a picture of themselves and tag @englishwoodlandstimber and @lowfatroubo (they're not pink btw)

My contribution to #markupmonday this week is the latest batch of #pencilgauges shipping out to workshops on three different continents in the next couple of days #madeinengland #handtools #bogoak #pear #handmade #furnituremaking #cabinetmaking #lowfatroubo #microshop

Feels like a Low Fat Roubo sort of day. Great tee, Derek! @lowfatroubo #furnituremaker #communityis #lowfatroubo

Made the most of the last few rays of sunshine today to get the leg vise installed on the #lowfatroubo #bench In search of a pair of wheels now to ease the travel back and forth #cabinetmaking #furnituremaking

@Regrann_App from @lowfatroubo a short course tutor at #westdeancollege - It's been chop day today. Fresh #syp shavings basking in early morning sunlight #cabinetmaking #furnituremaking #lowfatroubo #bench - #regrann

The peg rail on the leg vise is #mortise and #tenoned into the chop with wedges. I cut my wedge slots at an angle to create a double wedge shape inside the mortise. Drilling a hole at the base of the slot is nothing out of the ordinary. Note the grain direction at the bottom left corner of the mortise - not ideal but with a slightly larger hole than I would normally drill I'm hoping there's enough spring so it doesn't develop a split when the wedge is driven home #lowfatroubo #bench #cabinetmaking #furnituremaking

A big bold chamfer seems to suit the robust proportions #lowfatroubo #bench #furnituremaking #cabinetmaking

Flattening a #softwood bench top is almost fun to do although I wouldn't want to do it too often #furnituremaking #cabinetmaking #lowfatroubo #bench

Dropped the top onto the base of my #lowfatroubo #bench today. These joints were cut more than a year ago and surprisingly went together without too much fuss. No glue. Just gravity and wedges. #furnituremaking #cabinetmaking

There's a lot of detail crammed into a small space on the front of the #lowfatroubo #moxon some of it for good reason like the cross wedged tenon and some for show

My latest article is out : historical furniture finishes-the wax polissoir. Published in #furnitureandcabinetmakingmagazine , July 2016, issue 246. Magazine edited by Derek Jones , also known as #lowfatroubo on Instagram . In my article I look into 18th century furniture finishing techniques, using various sources, including 18th century treatises (#roubo ), painting, royal archival materials..... My article focus on wax finish and the wax polissoir. Most of you on Instagram have never heard of the word polissoir before. The polissoir is a simple polisher / burnisher made of common rushes (a plant / grass , Latin Juncus). Once impregnated with wax, the polissoir helps finishing quickly and efficiently furniture , with amazing resulting gloss. Typical of 18th century : simple but efficient. Some of you have bought ready made polissoir from #lienielsentoolworks made by Don Williams. Don Williams is the translator of Roubo into English "to make it as perfectly as possible", published by #lostartpress . Don's translation is an amazing, titanic achievement , but unfortunately with the unavoidable errors. When Don translated roubo and made his polissoirs, he used ordinary broom grass, and not the rushes discussed by Roubo. I have tried Don's polissoir made of broom grass and I have to say, not as good as a polissoir made of common rushes. Roubo, back in 1772, already wrote that no other type of grass worked as well as common rushes. I am therefore terribly sorry to tell all the users / buyers of the broom polissoir that it is not the best way and not 'as perfect as possible'. Conclusion: get to the river, and get some rushes and make your own polissoir. I am currently keeping an eye at the rushes in my river, just came out last week and should be ready to harvest in July. But first, buy #furnitureandcabinetmakingmagazine #marquetry #cabinetmaking #polissoir #polissoire #wax #waxing #furniturefinish #furniturefinishing #yannickchastang #roubo

Repost....
Ladies & Gentlemen, I have a little announcement to make - #lowfatroubo has just increased its online presence with its own website, now making it easier to book courses, ask questions and generally keep up to date with future plans. www.lowfatroubo.co.uk To mark the event I'm offering a free set of soft, medium and hard wax polishes to anyone that uses the new website to book a place on either of the French Polishing courses this year. The closing date for this offer is midday (BST) 22nd April 2016. Space is limited so don't hang around, once they're gone they're gone. And it doesn't end there. Because this Instagram community has contributed so much to my activities in the last couple of years I'm offering 1 free place on the October French Polishing course. Fees and materials usually add up to £312.50. To enter the draw send me an email (just the subject line is fine) from the Contacts page on the new website. The winner will be chosen at random over the weekend of 23rd/24th April. Feel free to #regram #repost at will. Good luck #frenchpolish #polishanglais #furnituremakingcourses #furnituremaking #cabinetmaking #restoration #shellac

And bingo we're done for now. Just waiting for a special piece of elm burr veneer to make a panel in the lid void and then polish. Perhaps even a lock. Waiting for further instructions. #campaign style chest #cabinetmaking #furnituremaking #handtools

It's dry fit day on the #lowfatroubo bench for the first two legs. Nice and snug, now to take the rest of the day off #woodworking #cabinetmaking #roubo #workshop #wedges

#French #polishing 1 to 1 class in #Piddinghoe for the next couple of days. Essential item ? 1 x box of Quality Street #lowfatroubo #finishing #woodworking #furnituremaking #cabinetmaking

The #lowfatroubo bench is coming together and there's a spare 62mm dia screw thread left over. Maple thread and nut with oak bar handle. £140 plus shipping. First to say yes takes it away. #screwvise #cabinetmaking #furnituremaking #woodworking #roubo

#lowfatroubo Screw vice and garter done. Looking back I'd say this was about as much fun as I've ever had in the workshop.

#lowfatroubo a typical 'shaving' from the 2tpi thread cutter

This is my good friend Colin Sullivan age 76. He's an authority on old tools with dates, names and stories in his head that keep me entertained for hours. Colin turned the columns for the wooden screw vice for the #lowfatroubo so had the first go with thread cutter. Yes it is as tough as it looks

#lowfatroubo And we do it all again on Monday

#lowfatroubo With a pair of joints complete its time to laminate the remaining bench top components and the corresponding legs

#lowfatroubo Just hope somebody is around in the morning to help me move it

#lowfatroubo Weapon of choice today has been the #Maffell #duodoweler

#lowfatroubo A row of dowels helps to keep the top edges aligned and takes a lot of stress out of assembly. No glue on the dowels. If the only thing preventing the top from exploding is a little peg the likelihood is something's gone terribly wrong anyway. And I've still got a few thousand of the little bu##ers to use up

#lowfatroubo Bench top is coming together nicely. I've been gluing the boards up in pairs then joining them together. This is the final round to complete the centre part of the top.

#lowfatroubo And bingo. Doesn't look like much but it's progress. Gluing up tomorrow

Probably the most unpopular bloke down the timber yard this morning. All the 2x4s out the rack to find enough knot free #SYP for an emergency #lowfat #Roubo bench. #budgetwhatbudget #ineedityesterday

There they are. The #lowfatroubo class of 2014 French Polishing students L to R Sarah, Andy, Dan, Tim, Ruchard, Christian and Simon in the front. All students at @robinsonhousestudio Thanks to a great team, pleasure working with you all and especially Marc for the allowing us to put this on. #frenchpolish #shellac

Before we get too carried away with next years event - yes it's already being planned - I thought it would be a good time to remind ourselves how and why this whole thing got started. #lowfatroubo a partnership of professionals and enthusiasts passionate about preserving the craft of fine furniture making'. So whether you've bought a place on one of our courses, donated tools for the auction or just popped in to see what we're up to you rank as a partner in our book and we're extremely proud to be working with you.
I'm trying not to put a value on all the tools that we have collected over the last few months but a casual glance back through the archives suggests that it amounts to a tidy sum, all of which will be donated to Warwickshire College Furniture Courses when the chest and it's contents are auctioned. The auctioneers, David Stanley have also offered to waive their fee. Right now that seems a long way off as the chest still needs fitting out and a coat of milk paint but we have already made a difference by being able to give places free of charge on both of our courses to students already enrolled at Warwickshire. Tom Foulger, Simon Ferguson, Daniel Chinn, Hollie Smith and Tom Golding were the first of what we hope will be a long line of new recruits to the craft that get a chance to shine. And boy did they shine. There was one guest that we were honoured to have with us, Marco Terenzi from Detroit who was an inspiration to us all. So, round of applause everyone, we couldn't have done it without you. #anarchiststoolchest #warwickshire #lostartpress #dutchtoolchest

140mm long (5 1/2") it's quite unusual so another great addition to our ATC. Be sure to check out Philly Planes full range of wooden planes, moulders, fillisters, snipes and jacks. Thanks for your support Phil #lowfatroubo #anarchiststoolchest

It was all hands on deck this week for the students at Warwickshire college as the timber for the ATC and DTC courses arrived on site. That's a lot of yellow pine. Hopefully enough for 20 of each #anarchiststoolchest #dutchtoolchest #warwickshire #lowfatroubo #yellowpine

Some essential housekeeping today at #lowfatroubo and a chance to review what we have so far for the #atc With around 11 weeks to go before the course I'd say we're about half way down our wish list. There's plenty left to come in and one or two little surprises as well but for now here's where we're at. Enjoy #handtools #woodworking #furnituremaking #cabinetmaking #carpentry #handmade #beautifulthings

Plastic gone and wenge fitted #lowfatroubo

Decided to make a few improvements to the brace that's going into our ATC courtesy of the very talented and generous Mark Baker #handbrace #workshop #wenge #turning #anarchiststoolchest #lowfatroubo

Well it's been a long wait but worth every second for the latest item to go into our #ATC Jeff Hamilton's marking gauges are just out of this world #jeffhamilton #markinggauge #handtools #furnituremaking #cabimetmaking #handmade #lowfatroubo

Latest addition to the #ATC is here and what a stunning piece of #craftsmanship. These bad boys from #BadAxe are truly a work of art.
