Today! Dance Parade Makes Manhattan MOVE! #DANCEFORPEACE
THE 11TH ANNUAL NEW YORK DANCE PARADE & FESTIVAL! Follow @danceparadenyc
The New York City Dance Parade is the world's largest and ONLY parade to exclusively celebrate and showcase the history and diversity of DANCE! Dance Parade and DanceFest is an annual celebration that brings together thousands of dancers from hundreds of organizations!
Your eyes will be filled with the parade's multi-cultural, rhythm-infused, magical display of movement, art and color! On the Saturday before Memorial Day weekend, the parade boogies down Broadway at 1:00 PM, beginning at West 32nd Street. The costumed celebration ends in a party and show in Tompkins Square Park with a performance stage and teaching tents, where folks can learn some moves and show some of their own!
The Dance Parade unites dancers of all types and ages--hobbyists, students and professionals. “There's an expression 'if it feels good, do it," and dance feels good! You can see that in all the smiling faces from one culture to the next,” says Greg Miller, founder and development director of Dance Parade. "We want to inspire folks to take on this fun and healthy activity. The parade and festival serve to evoke joy and community. We connect to each other by a shared passion for dance." New York City has many parades, but the Dance Parade is the only parade that gives a vibrant voice to all New Yorkers instead highlighting one particular segment or group. Watching the diversity of Manhattan communicated through dance is not only riveting, but unifying. Dance is one of the most genuine forms of expression we have. Every culture or ethnic group that has ever existed had a way to express themselves through harmonious motion.
But the Dance Parade also has a weighty mission: to honor the art's historical roots; to unite in respecting its diversity; to support grass-roots organizations; to legitimize dance as a communicative act, a social form of expression; and to invoke joy and brotherhood.
